Product Description

From the Back Cover

This book contains over 200 photographs, cuttings and various items of memorabilia that illustrate the story of Rotherham United from the early years right up to the present day.

Rotherham United didn't come into existence until 1925, but prior to then Rotherham Town and Rotherham County (formerly known as Thornhill United) were competing for local supremacy. Material from the beginning of the club's history includes a programme from 1884 (produced for Rotherham's first-ever FA Cup tie) and early team groups, as well as nineteenth-century player registration forms and posters. More modern items include many action shots, player portraits, cartoons and programme covers. This collection of rare memorabilia follows the United story through various ups and downs (such as that glorious day at Wembley in 1996) right up to the present day. Special attention is paid to great characters that have been associated with the club, such as Gladstone Guest, Dave Watson and Ronnie Moore.

With detailed captions from Gerry Somerton, a well-known local journalist, radio broadcaster and club historian, this pictorial record will revive many fond memories as well as giving an insight into the distant past of Rotherham United Football Club.

5.0 out of 5 stars A superb pictorial history of Rotherham United FC., 20 Jan 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Rotherham United Football Club (Archive Photographs: Images of Sport) (Paperback)
The book is exactly as described in the title: Images of Sport: Rotherham United. There is no long winded diatribe in any part of the book before any historical fact is made. The captions that accompany the photographs get straight to the point regarding their relevance in the history of the club.

The approach used in presenting the information contained in the book highlights some facinating facts about the club. These include a number of "Footballing firsts" which for a "small" club, some may find surprising.

If you are looking for a no nonsense history of Rotherham United, which contains photographs dating back to the late 1800's, then this is the book for you.
