5.0 out of 5 stars A very well told story., 1 April 2009
By Chris Warne (Harrow, UK) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Cleopatra (Paperback)
I am slightly surprised by the negative comments re this book. I do agree that it probably is not the ultimate biography of Egypt's most famous queen and yes there is a lot of reference to Marc Anthony and Octavian Augustus. But many 'fuller' biographies of Cleopatra (and I have read many)tend to get too bogged down with detail. This is a political biography not a grimoire of Egyptian economic and social issues. Often with bigger and more detailed books there is a tendency for the author to waffle or-worse still-make far too many comparisons with 21st century moral standards. This is a story of a woman who lived 2000 years ago and most be viewed as such. Anthony and Octavian had a massive impact on Cleopatra's life and both were iconic statesmen in their own right (Octavian went on to become the first Roman emperor). In short, I think this book provides a good starting point for all with a general interest in Cleopatra. It effectively provides the most interesting aspects of her life, both politically and personally, without ubiquitous narrative.

1.0 out of 5 stars Cleopatra for Beginners, 10 Jun 2008
I was very disappointed in this book. This account is very superficial and shows little knowledge of the complexity of Roman politics, the nature of soldiering in the era of Civil Wars, or the workings of the Ptolemic kingdom. It is also lazily written; with too many 'off the shelf' cliches or randomly selected explanations.

2.0 out of 5 stars Yes, but what about Cleopatra?, 4 Sep 2007

Whilst I appreciate that in order to tell the story of Cleopatra you need to include the history of Caesar, Mark Anthony and Octavian (about which the author is very knowledgeable), this book gives no insight into the life of Cleopatra - I can only assume that very little is known about her, in which case maybe authors should stop writing books entitled 'Cleopatra'.
