5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent treatment of the Peak - past & present, 21 May 2002
By A Customer
A rich and varied book that traces the history of the Peak District through a "natural biography" of its complex relationships. The human and the non-human are seen as two sides of a coin, their value when freshly minted quite different to that of their antiquity. The book is illustrated througout by fine black and white photos, the relevance of which is brought out with immense clarity by the text.It is not a book primarily for the archaeologist but offers a key to the landscape of the Peak that avoids cliche and demands we see acknowledge the complexity of the area. There is overall a concentration on the early periods, not suprisingly seeing as the author is a reader in prehistory, and it is true that the tantilising last chapters made me wish to see it brought up to the present with the same level of analysis. All in all for those with an interest in the development of the landscape and more broadly with issues of human impact on the "natural" a worthwhile read.
