I used to think all history was boring! I was crazy!
If you enjoyed the Channel 4 series, to which this book relates, you'll find this book even more enjoyable than the series. It's not only informative of the period, but it's a great read. It's a difficult and complicated century to get to grips with, but it's well worth the effort. Stevie Davies' book is as good a place as any to start. Don't be put off if you didn't see the television series as this book stands on its own merit. Anyone familiar with Stevie's writing will know that she has the most wonderful gift for uncovering quirky facts and anecdotes about our forebears. She transforms historical characters from being dusty old relics into becoming alive and vibrant. Their characters jump out at you from within the pages. Stevie Davies obviously loves this stormy period of history and it shows in her writing. If you love this book, which I'm sure you will, try Stevie Davies' Unbridled Spirits: Women of the English Revolution 1640-1660. Another super read from this fine author.
