Review
In response to the success of its daytime TV programme of the same name, Channel 4 has published this companion handbook for those thinking of buying a home abroad. The result is a detailed look at the pros and cons of making a purchase including hidden charges, what peculiar local laws might apply and various other pitfalls that await the unwary. As in any country, the price of a house is not always the best guide to what its eventual cost will be. The subtitle, Buying Your Dream Home Abroad, shows what the emphasis of the book is, but you don't have to be looking for your own overseas retreat to enjoy reading it. Anyone who likes watching the TV programme for its location shots and guide to life in sunnier places will find plenty of interest here - not least the sumptuous pictures. Freelance journalist and writer Fanny Blake has showcased all the countries and locations featured in the TV series. These include the most exotic parts of France, Italy, Spain, the Canaries, Florida and the West Indies as well as more surprising spots in Croatia, Bulgaria and Romania. But the book is less concerned with colourful description than with the nitty-gritty of detail. Its job is to impart information and advice, and this it does in some detail. Readers are told how to get there, what climate to expect, the sort of culture and food on offer, and, just as important, how to choose the perfect location and negotiate a way through the purchasing process. Fans of the TV series will also be glad to read comments from those featured in recent programmes on how they are settling into their new environments. (Kirkus UK)
