"British Legends" investigates five heroes of British history: Boudicca, Macbeth, King Harold, William Wallace (better known as Braveheart) and Robin Hood. Although all but one died a failure, each was seen as symbolizing something great during their lifetime. Tony Robinson journeys into history to trace the true stories of some of the greatest Britons that every lived, seeking to discover who the real people were behind the myths that surround them, and ultimately how these myths have woven themselves into our nation's character and its perception of itself.

3.0 out of 5 stars Reasonable attempt at dispelling myth from history, 14 Jul 2003
This book looks at the history and folklore of several well known people from British History - like Robin Hood, Boudicca and William Wallace.

The book stratches the surface of each character's legend and the history surrounding the real life person. I came away from the book wanting to know more about the history.

I purchased this book at the same time as Legendary Warriors: Folklore's Greatest Heroes in Myth and Reality by Daniel Mersey. The two books, which cover similar areas, combine well to present a vivid history and retelling of myths between them. This book has the better pictures, and Legendary Warriors covers the history better; if you are interested in Robin Hood, Macbeth or William Wallace, by both books for a better all round picture.

'In Search of British Heroes' accompanies the Channel 4 series 'Fact or Fiction' and is written by presenter Tony Robinson in his usual easy style. Five 'heroes' are looked at in the book: Boudica; McBeth; King Harold; William Wallace and Robin Hood. Robinson's enthusiasm comes clearly across while on the trail of these figures from the past. McBeth turns out to be a very different man from the character written by Shakespeare. Robin Hood has the least solid historical foundations, but Robinson digs up some interesting evidence for real Robins! The book also helpfully provides illustration and directions of how to get to some of the sites talked about in the book, if you fancy following one of the trails by yourself. Robinson's style helps to make this an easy and enjoyable read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Enthralling and engaging, 18 Dec 2007
I found it very hard to put this book down because it was full of interesting stories and pictures. This book also contains directions to the places that are featured, so it can be a truly interactive book if you wish! They style of writing is quite serious, so you don't really feel the character of Tony Robinson, but that is not a problem if the reason that you bought the book was to find out more about history. Overall, it is highly recommended, but perhaps readers who already know quite a bit about the historical figures that are featured may find this quite a light read.
