Product Description

Review

'Kellerman...shows that his impressive debut, Sunstroke, was no fluke with this gripping psychological page-turner that echoes the best of Hitchcock... Kellerman artfully conveys [a] descent into near madness, making the step-by-step degradation of a decent man who was in the wrong place at the wrong time plausible and chilling ' - Publishers Weekly (starred review) 'A shivery psychological thriller...the talented Kellerman travels to Ruth Rendell country, and the bet here is that you won't have read a more nightmarish novel all year ' - Kirkus Reviews (starred review) '[M]any perverse diversions and delights...unnerving...psychologically complex... That Kellerman maintains such a grimly hilarious perspective on his subject is its own twisted tribute to the survival instincts of writers who go down to the depths to entertain their readers ' New York Times Book Review 'With a nerve-jangling creepiness rising out of well-drawn, absorbing characters, "Trouble" has a lot to say to 21st century readers about the gray zone where heroes become villains, victims turn aggressive and love and violence are different sides of the same coin. That these issues are being raised by a young writer more than a little familiar with mysteries...only adds to the fun of watching him deconstruct the myths and stereotypes of the genre and serve them up as something disturbingly and deliciously different, altogether perfect for our times' - Los Angeles Times A major talent...a thriller so tightly wired that the reader's self-control shatters nearly to the level of protagonist Jonah Stem's...frightening suspense, wry humor and superior characterization and dialogue' - Baltimore Sun 'A mesmerising story of malevolence and obsession...Kellerman's powerfully descriptive prose drives his nightmarish narrative on at a fast pace and makes Fatal Attraction seem like gentle teasing in comparison.' Sunday Telegraph

'Fulfils the promise of his debut last year with a mesmerising story of
malevolence and obsession... powerfully descriptive prose drives his
nightmarish narrative on at a fast pace and makes Fatal Attraction seem
like a gentle teasing in comparison' --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars Compulsive..., 4 April 2009
By holly "hollyjuls" (United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Trouble (Paperback)
I bought this book after reading The Brutal Art (which I also enjoyed), and loved it. I note that a previous reviewer suggested it might be a bit misogynistic. I don't see why, we get male nutjobs in thrillers all the time. Nothing wrong with a bit of equal opportunity bunny boiling.

3.0 out of 5 stars Troubling, 2 April 2007
By Keris Nine - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
This review is from: Trouble (Hardcover)
After another difficult and tiring day at the hospital where he is a medical student, Jonah Stem stumbles across an incident in the street where a woman has just been stabbed by an assailant. Without any thought for the danger he is getting himself into, Jonah rushes to her rescue and in the ensuing struggle her attacker is killed.

The real danger that Jonah has got himself into however doesn't become apparent until quite a while later. Clearly, Jonah's intervention was an act of heroism not common on New York streets, but this doesn't prevent the family of the deceased would-be mugger landing a law-suit on the medical student for unlawful killing. But even that is not where the real trouble lies. When the young woman he has rescued makes contact with him, they embark on a dark and torrid affair. But all is not as it seems...

With a reasonably intriguing opening, there are any number of directions 'Trouble' could go in. Sadly, Kellerman Jr. goes for the bunny-boiler option and the whole thing just staggers from one level of improbability to another, particularly with the overly convenient use of home webcams and video recorders. At least as a thriller, it keeps you wondering where the ludicrous situation will lead, but there's something quite disagreeable and faintly misogynistic about it all.

4.0 out of 5 stars BE CAREFUL WHO YOU RESCUE, 5 Feb 2007
By Gail Cooke (TX, USA) - See all my reviews
(TOP 50 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Trouble (Hardcover)

Trouble in River City wasn't even a minor irritation compared to what third year medical student Jonah Stem found in the small hours of the morning on a sidewalk in New York City. He's seriously sleep deprived, stressed, and just wants rest. Nonetheless, when he hears a woman scream and finds her being attacked he doesn't hesitate.

Without thinking Jonah intervenes, but in trying to fend off her knife wielding attacker the knife somehow ends up in the attacker's throat. Jonathan has killed a man. But, that's okay as he saved the woman, Eve, and he's suddenly the Big Apple's hero of the day - "superdoc" who risked his neck to save another.

Well, being a hero isn't so great after all due to the ragging he gets from his superiors, the unwanted media attention, and the hatred of the dead man's family. As if his life hadn't already been turned upside down a grateful Eve unexpectedly shows up at this apartment. You can guess what's coming here - before long they're engaged in a hot affair. Well, perhaps "hot" isn't accurate as Eve has some pretty painful, perverse ideas about sex. This is one wanton woman. Sadomasochism is her thing and she wants Jonah on a silver platter (as well as on a hospital desk). Descriptions of their encounters are not for those with tender ears.

Jonah never bargained for any of this and seems unaware that he is being manipulated, pushed to the brink of madness. However, Eve is one of the most frightening females in recent literary creation and she's not about to let him go.

- Gail Cooke
