Product Description

Review
'A story of love and self discovery that resonates across the ages' Nicholas Evans ** 'The book grips ... It belongs to the unputdownable, so goodbye sleep. I love it ... the whole story sang' Mary Wesley ** 'The book is a lovely puzzle ... an enthralling, ambitious novel with distinct echoes of Hardy' Mail on Sunday ** 'If a book ever deserved a second chance, it's this; a historical novel, a love story and a tale of time slippage, just the tale you need when you want to escape into a book and forget the world for 480 pages. I first read this many years ago and it was wonderful to get the chance to go back to it. As fresh and intriguing as ever, the love story and the historical detail are all done with a master's touch. There's many a current bestseller in this vein that can't hold a candle to Long's involving story' Sue Baker, Publishing News **

The Times
`Magical . . . A novel so right, which taps into so many of our deepest thoughts, that you feel it had to be written by someone, at some point, and thankful that it has been written so well'

5.0 out of 5 stars I LOVE this book.........., 16 Jul 2008
I picked up Ferney as the third book in my '3 for 2' offer, without knowing the first thing about it. The cover drew me and the blurb on the back sounded interesting so I thought I'd give it a whirl.

I'm so glad I was tempted because it's such a fantastic book. A love story spanning countless years (and lifetimes), and I really, really felt for Gally and Ferney, imagining how they must have struggled to find each other in some of their lifetimes. I loved when they managed to get together at the same time in their lives and hated when they overshot each other through no fault of their own. Their very first lifetime together actually moved me when it was revealed exactly what caused them to be so intertwined.

I had a real problem with Gally's husband though......what a misery he was...........but then I wonder how my own spouse would be if I were in
Gally's position........probably no different.......however, still can't 'take' to him *shrug*. I just wanted Gally and Ferney to be together forever and it pained me when they weren't or had interruptions.

I didn't see the 2 big revelations at the end coming though. It came as such a shock. I almost wept when I found out where Gally had been prior to being 'this' Gally (that makes no sense, I know......you'll HAVE to read it) and the end twist was so beautiful but bittersweet at the same time. It left me thinking how that would work out for them both, for days on end after finishing the book.

Such a beautiful, thought provoking book and one that is definitely worth the read, even if it's not your usual type of reading material.

I keep wondering now if I share my present life with loved ones I've spent time with in other lifetimes. I'd like to hope so.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Compelling Read, 29 April 2008
By David Burnett ((Dorset, England)) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I read Ferney the first time round, and loved it then, but the recent piece about it in The Sunday Times as being a lost masterpiece made me go back to it again, and to reread it with that same shiver of page-turning excitement. Part of the pleasure is being familiar with the Somerset/Dorset border landscape in which it is set, but that's a minor bonus. James Long's greatest skill is the way in which he forges the relationship between the heroine, Gally, and Ferney, an old countryman she and her husband Mike meet when they buy a tumbledown cottage. Ferney is the key to the novel, and it's tricky to say more without giving away the plot. The truth is that Gally and Ferney have lived other lives, through other times, so that England's past - from Saxon times to the present - is brought beautifully to life in a series of episodes that never feel like a history lesson but an integral part of the story. This is a wonderful book, rich in emotion, with proper characters, and I just hope that this time round James Long gets the bestseller he deserves.

5.0 out of 5 stars my favourite book ever, 16 Oct 2002
This review is from: Ferney (Paperback)
Gally and Mike move into their ancient cottage in somerset their relationship becomes strained as an old man called Ferney becomes ever more important to Gally. Ferney seems to know so much of the history of the cottage and also knows why Gally has phobias and knows how to cure them. I dont want to give the main plot away but have to say this book is beautiful I have read it time and time again and would never part with this for the world.

This is a very unusual book and quite dark in places. It is enjoyable to read and deals with a difficult subject matter. The book is well written and quite a page turner. Read more
