5.0 out of 5 stars An emotive, thought provoking read, 27 Jan 2005
By Lis "chic_lit_addict" (Rotterdan, The Netherlands) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Something Borrowed (Paperback)
During the first half of the book I really did not like the main character Vicky at all. I thought she was a selfish, self-centred person who basically needed to stop blaming the world for the fact she was adopted, accept it and grow-up and get on with her life. Honestly she seemed to dislike everything and everyone, including her flatmate and her flatemate's friend (althought that was understandable), her adoptive parents as well as her cousins' and their parents! Oh yeah and her job and the lovely oldish lady that she worked with. On top of that the first half of the book seemed to drag a bit s well although that could be because the author portrayed a depressed person trying to fight everything and everyone so well.

In the second half of the book the pace seemed to pick up alot and despite my brave, desperate attempts not to I actually started to like Vicky. It was also during this section of the book that I got my wish Vicky started to grow up and accept the situation as well as to analyse certain aspects of her character. It was here that I needed to reach for the tissues as well, due to the fact that it was very funny in places and so immensely sad in others.

This book was given to me as a Christmas present, and was my first Tina Reilly book, I really enjoyed both the book and her style of writing so much that it will not be my last Reilly book. I highly recommend that you read it.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Very Enjoyable Book, 24 Jul 2007
By A. Rose (Yorkshire, Devon & Menorca) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Tina Reilly really is an under-rated authoress and should be up there with her Irish contemporaries - Patricia Scanlan, Sheila O'Flanagan, Cathy Kelly etc. I've now read three of her books and each were excellent stories with well defined characters and with great moral overtones. Something Borrowed centres around Vicky, the main female character, who was given up for adoption as a baby. When she decides to find her birth mother this obviously causes problems with the two lovely people who have brought her up as their own daughter but Vicky is also very sensitive to this. The book sensibly and sympathetically explores all aspects, opinions and viewpoints of adoption with very level-headed advice to the character and, of course, anybody thinking of contacting their birth mother. I found this a lovely book to read and not too depressing as other reviewers seem to have found. Overall I would say this is definitely worth a go and most readers would thoroughly enjoy the book.

5.0 out of 5 stars A compelling page turner, 12 May 2004
This review is from: Something Borrowed (Paperback)
A wonderful tale encapsulating the underlying theme of adaption, a subject which is taboo, emotional and sometimes heart breaking. Vicky, an adopted child, decides to launch a search for her birth parents. The vulnerability and confusion surrounding the outcome is beautifully portrayed. One never knows, when setting out on such a journey if the end result will bring more pain and rejection or joy and unification. You will have to read this captivating tale to find out which outcome will prevail for Vicky. Compassionately written, beautifully structered, but then again, one would not expect anything less from the very talented Tina Reilly, the author of this book.
