2.0 out of 5 stars An unfortunate denouement to a popular series., 8 May 2005
By Ian M. Jones "ruggedtoast" (uk) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I dont imagine that anything anyone writes here will put off a potential reader from getting ahold of this book. If youve gone through the first five then youre going to read this one right?

As a standalone book Id probably have given this one 3 stars, but as an ending to the entire series I can only offer a measly 2.

Why? Well, even the most avid Tilley fan would probably admit that this author is never going to win any awards for beautifully scripted flowing prose and narrative. Earth Thunder is no different but unfortunately the bright shockingly vivid imagination woven around a tight compellingly unpredicatble sci fi tour de force storyline that kept this reader coming back for more and more is sadly absent.

Too much of this book seems laboured and uninspired to be really enjoyable to read, and as the action only really begins to pick up in the last third the authors rough and ready style of writing becomes an unwelcome travel companion as the formulaic scene setting narrative, character setting narrative, descriptive prose triumverate starts to grate without a strong storyline to paper the cracks.

In fact youll be twiddling your thumbs until the final third of the book as little happens to build on any of the preceding books in the first third. The second third is taken up by an interminable and infuriatingly predictable plodding courtly intrigue storyline set in Ne-Issan which is all too redolent of mashed up and warmed over James Clavell.

So how about that ending that everyone complains about then? This book does pick up in the last 100 pages or so and that Tilley magic takes over your imagination and somehow makes the characters and world of the plainfolk spring to living breathing life in ones imagination, so at least it ended on a high. But this isnt the crescendo of action and event that the last five books have been working towards, nor is it the finale that Tilley fans deserve for faithfully following Steve Brickman and co throughout a 6 book series.

There is an opening for a 7th book though one cant help feeling that Tilley was long gone sick of writing this series and only left it hanging in case of times of financial hardship ahead, which is a pity because it robbed fans of the ending they expected and left a rather limp end to an inventive and exciting series.

3.0 out of 5 stars A rushed author is not a happy author., 7 Sep 2000
By A Customer
I've read all six books in the Amtrak series within the past few weeks and can say without hesitation that they were great! As a series, 5 stars would be my score. Unfortunately, I cannot be so generous with the last book. I get the impression that the author was rushed, perhaps to meet a publishing deadline. Previously, books were very chronological and time passed smoothly. Book 6 started the same way but regrettably picked up an uncharacteristic and wholly unwanted speed in the last few chapters. Months passed within sentences in a vague attempt to get to a thoroughly disappointing ending. The content was fine, with an unexpected demise or two, but the timing was all off. How can I explain this better? Take Steve's adventure rescuing Caddy and Clearwater from the Ironmasters, summarise this on to just one page and that's the sort of effect you'll get at the end of this book. Thankfully, the Internet grapevine informs me that there is a book 7 on its way. Hopefully, this is an indication that our Mr Tilley is taking a little more time with this (again hopefully) concluding novel. In summary, this book is a must, if only to find out who gets the chop (and to encourage the author to finish what he started).

2.0 out of 5 stars A tragic end to a brillaint series, 18 Feb 2002
I like so many others felt very frustrated by the rushed ending to Patricks book six.
I have been a avid follower of the series and read each and every one of the books with bated breathe. Of course having teh Illustarted Guide which origionally introduced and co-erced me in to the series helped
I hated the ending and have been waiting for years for news of the sequel
After a long wait it seems it MAY be coming
Overall the series was brilliant but the clumsy ending in book six may just kill the love of the series.
Hopefully Patrick will bring the series to a satisfactory close adn also bring out an enlarged Illustrated Guide to back up the series completely
It definitly gave the series flesh and would be most benificial

3.0 out of 5 stars Run of the mill workmanlike piece. Enjoyable nonetheless
Not particularly inspired and sometimes stylistically ... umm ... odd, the Amtrak Wars is nevertheless an enjoyable science fiction adventure series.
