Review

'Once you start THE EXILE, forget sleep. Its fierce, complex suspense is fast as a 9mm slug and tight as a hangman's noose.' Stephen Coonts

Product Description

Raymond Thorne is wanted for murder - in Mexico, in Chicago and, most of all, in Los Angeles. He's got the elite 5-2 Squad of the LAPD on his tail, but still eludes them, until John Barron collars him. Then he escapes again - by dying. Barron, injured himself and off the case, is obsessed by the true identity of the man, by the tantalising clues to his motives - the keys to an anonymous safety deposit box, two London addresses in a notebook alongside a date marked 'in Moscow'. But Barron is carving a new life for himself and his sister in Europe and he pushes the enigma to the back of his mind, until one of Thorne's contacts in LA is found murdered in Paris, and only one man could have killed him - Thorne. Is it possible he pulled off the greatest escape? How? Why? Determined to learn the truth, Barron sets on a dangerous trail which will lead him across Europe to the icy streets of St Petersburg where Thorne's true persona and devastating political ambition threatens the world order.

5.0 out of 5 stars a page turner - from page one till the very end, 12 Jul 2005
By Klaus van Amelrode "kmcva" - See all my reviews
(TOP 50 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
This review is from: The Exile (Paperback)
After having read the two reviews posted here, one praising, one trashing Allan Folsom' "The Exile" I was quite reluctant to buy the book. However, my all time all for all Romanov prevailed. And I have to admit: I do not regretted it all through the 855 pages!

It is a page turner, gripping, drawing the reader into the story with the starting page and never letting him go. It is an action book, not a book with large parts decribing things, settings etc. The main characters develop through action. I actually like that. I was quite amazed by myself as the main resaon I bought the book was the Romanov connection and that kicks only in fairly late, but nevertheless I could not let go. What is extremely helpful and very pleasent while reading the book is the shortness of chapters. So one can stop at any given moment and resume the story at a later stages without any problems. It emphasises as well the "action character" of the story.

So between the two extremes, praising or trashing the book ,
I come down without a show of a doubt in the praising department.
5 stars!! You will enjoy it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Wow!!, 13 Sep 2004
This review is from: The Exile (Paperback)
Having read "The Day After Tomorrow" and "The Day of Confession", I had high hopes and expectations of "The Exile". I was not disappointed.

The book starts with a scene from 20 years previous, something initially dismissed by the reader, until at some point you find yourself flicking back the pages to the start when the penny enventually drops.....

It is an ultra-slick novel with the classic Folsom-esque twists, turns and a storyline that fits together in a jigsaw-like manner.

Cleverly divided into 3 sections, the plot builds thicker and thicker without confusing the reader, whilst remaining intricate. I simply could not put this book down and managed to get through the last 500 pages in a single session, without stopping for a break.

If only Mr. Folsom were more prolific!

All in all, highly recommended....just remember - don't read that final page too early!

2.0 out of 5 stars Too long!, 14 Feb 2007
This book starts well. I hadn't read a thriller for some time, and I really enjoyed the fast-paced opening chapters. Unfortunately, it then becomes somewhat plodding, and is about two men chasing each other through America, Europe and finally Russia - for nearly 900 pages. The book could have been a third to a half as long and equally effective. I nearly gave up on this book several times, and only continued reading because I thought the style and pace of the opening chapters might return - but it never did. The unexpected and unconvincing sex scene on about page 350 added little, and the author's repeated incorrect usage of the word "Chunnel" as a synonym for the London to Paris Eurostar rail service was irritating.
