3.0 out of 5 stars A house is not a home, 20 Feb 2007
By Martha Grenon (Austin, TX United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: A House by the Shore (Paperback)
I initially started out liking this book, which tells a story we have read before: Young couple decide to leave the big city, find an old wreck of a house and then turn it into a successful hotel/restaurant, which is exactly what Alison and Andrew Johnson did, beginning in 1974. I was interested in reading this book in particular because they chose to make their dream a reality on the Outer Hebrides island of Harris, which I plan on visiting in a few months.

The couple begin saving for the business by working as school teachers on Harris, where, apparently, conditions are such that the beating of students who misbehave is allowed. Within a couple of years, they discover an old manse (minister's house) that belongs to the Church near Scarista, on the western coast. After much bargaining, they finally acquire the house and begin the enormous task of making it livable. It seems like very few details are left out concerning the renovation. After a while, I began to skim over some of these laborious descriptions because I am more interested in learning of the life on Harris than reading a do-it-yourself guide.

What I did find a bit strange, however, was that the author wrote more thoroughly of a dog they adopted than their daughter. The dog is allowed to eat chocolate mousse, the main ingredient of which--chocolate--has been known to kill dogs. We never find out when the daughter was born and if the birth was in any way an impediment to the renovation. Perhaps the daughter was adopted like the dog. We don't find out her name--Sarah-- until much later in the narrative. Until then, she's variously referred to as the "undeserving" or "ratty infant."

At last they are able to open and become a great success. I was led to read this book after finding a description of Scarista House in a guidebook. I knew that I could not afford to spend the night there, but thought to splurge on one of their gourmet meals. However, after reading the book, I found myself unable to like the woman who wrote it, much less her kitchen behaviour of picking food up off the floor and serving it to guests.
