Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

There are few writers practising in the crime and thriller field with the assurance and skill of Kellerman, and this latest jumbo-sized outing is well up to par. While the plotting may be more diffuse than usual, the rich panoply of characters created here soon ensures a compelling read. When a young boy witnesses a murder, he finds himself pursued by both the police and the killer. The killing (of a beautiful young woman, Lisa Ramsey, in Los Angeles' Griffith Park) soon has Detective Petra Connor and her partner Stu Bishop involved. The principal suspect is her husband, TV star Cart Ramsey, who had beaten her up. And the echoes of the OJ Simpson case has the LAPD brass keen to avoid a repetition of history. Along with a gift for making a now-familiar locale seem fresh and unusual, Kellerman's ace in the hole has always been dialogue: rudimentary and lacking in any true-life resonance in so many thrillers, razor-sharp in Kellerman. With a cannily drawn heroine and a scarifying vision of the political blood-letting within a major us police force, this is a different kind of thriller to such earlier winners as Blood Test, but none the worse for that. Perhaps Kellerman is only just beginning to show us what he can do. --Barry Forshaw --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

5.0 out of 5 stars A gripping read, 13 Mar 2000
By A Customer
Being a Jonathan Kellerman fan and in particular an Alex Delaware fan I was curious to read this book. It is absolutely no disapointment! The heroine is really great, she makes you almost forget Alex Delaware and Milo Sturgis. Fortunately they do make a guestappearance (sort of). I really hope that Jonathan Kellerman will continue writing books with Petra Connor as heroine. She is totally believable. The book itself... just read it and be prepared not to want to put it down until you have finished and then be disappointed because you have!

5.0 out of 5 stars Compelling, interesting and satisying murder mystery, 26 Oct 2000

I am new to Kellerman. It said on the cover the book was ingenious. I agree. The style of parallel storylines from Billy's viewpoint and similarly Petra Connor (the detective) and other characters perception you are effectively in the helicopter looking down on it all happening beneath you. I cannot praise this book too highly and I looked forward to reading chapters at every opportunity I had. This is a must buy book for all who like US based murder mysteries. Great mix of detection, nasty characters, good guys getting along, seedy life in Los Angeles, trailer trash, etc. An excellent murder story with hopefully potential for more in a series?

5.0 out of 5 stars Mr Kellerman has done it again - GREAT read, 21 April 2003

I am always apprehensive reading a book by an author that is not part of the established series that started me reading the author: I refer of course to the Alex Delaware books, which I just love - but this time I needn't have worried. Alex does get a look in and Milo gets a mention, but this is Petra's own - although not the author's usual style, he has done a great job with the characters and unlike one review I read, I didn't think his 12 year old was "too intelligent". I liked the switching from one character to another's point of view - especially Billy's, to me he was being just a normal 12 year old although more compassionate and moral than what seems normal these days. A lovely little vignette of a character was Sam Ganzer - Billy had to find somebody who wasn't going to let him down! The suspense is built up cunningly: first you think you know who it is and then you don't and when the ending arrives, justice prevails in a very satisfying manner. Petra and her partner, Stu Bishop are written as real, credible people who you care about what happens to them - and all the way through you're worried for Billy and HAVE to know what happens next. In fact, one of the great Kellerman reads!! I hope Petra and Stu come back to visit again
