Maeve Haran manages to pull of something that other writers struggle with - How to write about a very strong-willed, career-minded woman without making her too hard. Often, you have very little empathy for characters that make all kinds of sacrifices to get ahead in their careers (although many of us do it in real life!) Francesca is a character you can understand and empathize with - even if she does put herself in the far-fetched position of being a woman of basically decent character who somehow ends up pregnant --and unsure of exactly who the father is. (Haran's characters often have a few rough edges!) Balancing off Francesca's story is that of her parents and her mentor at work - older folks who made choices and compromises and are living with the results. Finally, there are the two men in her life - and although you get a sense very early on who she will end up with, you also see how they both have made some hard choices based on their own set of circumstances. All in all - it's a lovely romance, but there are some deeper issues here. I really couldn't put it down, much to my family's annoyance!

A touching insight to the desperate world of a thirtysomething woman, career fulfilled, she is looking for more: a man and a baby, not necessarily in that order, All That She Wants takes you on a journey from confused conception, to the high flying world of journalism.
