Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Homicide detective John Corey's convalescence on Long Island from a bullet wound is cut rudely short when his new neighbours are found shot dead on their patio. It doesn't take long for Corey to get involved, not least because the detective in charge of the case is single, blonde and female. The dead couple were leading research scientists at the top secret biological research site on nearby Plum Island, so the fear that their murders are bound up in a biological warfare plot adds an extra frisson to the case. But Corey doesn't buy this theory as readily as everybody else and within two days he has fallen out with his colleagues and fallen in love with someone else. His natural cop instincts lead him to investigate his own theories, and, well, the rest is history. It's a wisecracking American detective classic well told through the words of tough guy Corey. The plot ducks and dives in the most exhilarating of ways, and dialogue exchanges such as "I'm a credit to my gender"..."Only your gender would think so" typify the banter. Not a book to mull over, but then this type of fiction is always at its best when consumed in the same quick-fire way it is delivered. --Claire Allfree

5.0 out of 5 stars The best by far - in my opinion of course., 26 Oct 2005
I picked up a copy of Plum Island whilst on holiday many moons ago and it was the first Nelson DeMille book I'd ever read. Being a fan of Jack Reacher, Harry Bosch and Alex Cross novels I instantly identified with John Corey.

Sure, he's a little more wisecracking than any of the other characters I mentioned above, but I loved him for it all the same.

So it was with great diappointment that I wnet on to read virtually everything else by Mr DeMille and, in my opinion, nothing else was as funny, smart and, yes sometimes, irreverent.

In my opinion (who else's could I give?) this is the best book that Nelson DeMille has written.

5.0 out of 5 stars DeMille doesn't disappoint ... , 6 Jun 2007
After reading both Night Fall and Lion's Game, I had to read Plum Island. I found this one more refreshing in the sense that it doesn't focus on international terrorism; also, it was timely as I read it while the Pirates of the Carribean hoopla was on and so it kinda tied in! (Hope I didn't give anything away there)
A brilliant book, Corey's character one-liners never fail to make me laugh out loud. DeMille wrote a classic here; another must-read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Meet the irresistible John Corey and you won't be disappointed!!!!, 24 May 2006
Convalescing in the North Fork of Long Island, NYPD cop John Corey is asked by the local police chief to look into the murder of a young couple. The Gordons worked as scientists at Plum Island, a Government research site, on biological diseases such as Ebola and Anthrax. Could the Gordons' have tried to sell samples of the disease to the wrong people? Or could the answer be routed in the past, since Plum Island has a notorious history going back to the pirates who frequented it. Corey is definitely one of the wittiest characters I've ever come across. I love his flippant attitude. The pirate lore was fascinating, and I was totally surprised by the plot twist toward the end of the book. This will not be the last John Corey book I read.
