5.0 out of 5 stars Don't interupt me, I'm reading, 16 Feb 2006
By Snapdragon (London) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
This review is from: Disturbia (Paperback)
One day I'm going to contact Christopher Fowler and ask for commission. I read this book (in one sitting) a couple of years ago and have recently re-read it, and subsequently recommended it to everyone. Even people who don't ususally read (and I mean people who's book collection consists of a First Aid book and the Yellow Pages) have read and loved it.
I don't know if the other reviewer was expecting Trollope or Dickens (in which case I can understand the disappointment) but it does just what it says on the tin.
It's a fast paced thriller, good twists and lots of London atmosphere. I love it becasue it's so visual (why hasn't it been made into a film??), a real page turner, and great if you're sitting on the sofa with a stinking cold and a big box of chocs. A real Londoners book. Buy it, you won't be disappointed!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great build-up, disappointing ending., 6 Jan 2003
By Ian Macdonald "twomax" (Perth, Scotland) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This is the third Christopher Fowler novel I've read (the others being Spanky and Psychoville) and like these other books, I've been left a little bit disappointed on finishing it. There's just something missing.
The storyline, which concerns a student who has been set a series of 'Treasure Hunt' type clues by the gentleman leader of an extremist club, has the unfortunate male running around London throughout the course of one night a la Anneka Rice. Instead of winning some cash from Kenneth Kendall however, if successful, he earns the right to publish a book which would expose the League of Promethius for what they really are. Oh and he also gets to live. If unsuccessful, or if he cheats, his friends or family are at risk of being killed.
I have to say the clues are extremely difficult, unless you have an in-depth knowledge of London history, but I can claim with great smugness and satisfaction that I managed to solve the first clue (but none of the others!)
The narrative for the first nine tenths of the book is riveting and I found it difficult to put the book down. Unfortunately the ending wasn't able to top off what had gone before and I was disappointed with its anti climax.
Having said that, the book gets a four out of five for being relentless throughout. I'd class this more of a thriller than horror though.
If you're thinking of trying out Fowler's work, then this is as good a book to start on as any.

5.0 out of 5 stars BUY IT NOW !, 28 Mar 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Disturbia (Paperback)
Picked this one up by mistake - but I didn't regret it one bit. Fast paced, excellent storyline, beautiful ending and some good strong characters. I'd never heard of Fowler before - but I'll be keeping my eyes peeled from now on.
