5.0 out of 5 stars A vivid view of the peroid, from the French veiw and clever., 21 Feb 2001
A book written in the format of the 'Sharpe' books, but from the French side. Containing vivid accounts of the period within France, from the lowest prisoner to calvary at the uprising of Napoleon Bonaparte to a General of France. Actions and battles are written as if you could have been there, as well as the little battles that concern the main caracter, Alain Lausard who has a past that is as dangerous to him as France's enemies over there boarders. I realy like this book, and would also mention that it does not get boged down in enharent facts but also has a funny side which makes this an entertaining read that i was not able to put down until i finished. I rate this book highly and as it mentions on the front of the book "Fighting a revolutionary war, renegades are heroes...".

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent read, 30 Jul 1999
By A Customer
I've read dozens of novels set in the Napoleonic Wars, all invariably from the British point of view. Finally there is a series narrated from the French perspective. And its an excellent book. Think of the Sharpe series, substituting Richard Sharpe with an aristocrat serving as a cavalry Sergeant in the Republican army.

1.0 out of 5 stars Bad research and boring plot, 1 Oct 2000
By A Customer
Another novel stiled after cornwell`s sharpe series but without the quality. The plot drags along, the caracters are flat and obviosly there has been little research on the historic background. Richard Howard didn`t realise that the armies of revolutionary france differt in many aspects from other contemporary forces. therefore he never comes near to creating a convincing picture of the revolutionary wars

4.0 out of 5 stars Good thinking
I read this at least a year ago, so this is going to be vague. I particularly enjoyed the training aspects of this book, and the fact that it was written from a French point of... Read more

1.0 out of 5 stars Inaccurate history, lacklustre storytelling.
I may eventually make my way through this tedious novel. There is no comparision between this and Cornwell. The history is superficial and inaccurate at times. Read more

2.0 out of 5 stars A rather tedious novel.
The story is tedious. It appears to be setting the scene for a long series of books rather than providing a good novel. Read more
