Bill Bryson has achieved a reputation as a funny and sympathetic writer of his experiences as a traveller in this big wide world of ours. Unfortunately in this big wide world there will always be those who choose to sell their second rate products by associating them with the books of a succesful writer. This is one such. The cover announces the title "Bizarre World - Bill Bryson", to capture the punters. Inside "Bill Bryson" changes to "Bill Bryson Jnr." and the title is acknowledged as a re-print of a tome entitled "The book of blunders" circa 1982, with no mention of the now famous Mr Bryson throughout its length. The book is another example of the oft repeated 'funny things newspapers record`, and as such it is mildly amusing. It won't rock you on your seats with laughter as the incisive wit of the true Mr Bryson will, but for its cost it is only mildly disappointing. Bill Brysons book "Notes from a small Island" came to my notice at this years Edinburgh Festival when its content was acted out to great effect and amusement. I bought this book on the back of seeing that performance, hoping to get similar entertainment. I have been disappointed, but fortunately I bought a 'real' Bill Bryson at the same time - "Bill Bryson - Down Under" and already my wife who is reading it as I write this review has passed it to me to read a particular passage which shows the true genius of the man. Regrettably "Bizarre World" is not in the same class, and its inclusion as a book written by Bill Bryson is very disappointing when it is just a collection of - not very funny - newspaper clippings that could have been compiled by anyone.

I found this book disappointing. A clearly unshamefaced attempt to sell a bunch of newspaper clippings under Bill Brysons name. The book took me half an hour to read. Anyone expecting to read about or experience the humour of Bill Bryson will be severely disappointed.

I bought this because I am a huge Bill Bryson fan. This book, however, is not Bill Bryson, merely a collection of not-always-that-funny newspaper clippings. If you want a laugh, buy one of his proper books
