5.0 out of 5 stars A Fascinating, (if a Little One-Sided) Triumph, 23 April 2003
Everyone I have shown this book to have agreed it is absolutely beautiful. I think "beautiful" encapsulates its charm rather well, as this is intriguing coffee-table stuff.

The gorgeously glossy (and might I add, extremely weighty) book covers the history of Tinseltown from it's early silent days at the beginning of the 20th century, up until the late 1990s.

The glamourous subject matter lends itself well to the predominately pictorial-based format, and both films and their stars are well-represented. I found some of the off-screen shots some of the most interesting - most memorably, for me at least, was a snap of Charlie Chaplin out of make-up, working on a sewing machine. The short, but informative captions add to the impression that the reader is actually gaining a decent insight into the Hollywood system.

The only down-side that I spotted with this book was it's rather biased approach, but with a title like this, what can you expect?! Whilst this book is not what call incisive, it certainly makes for engrossing reading for anyone with even a passing interest in popular culture and its origins. If you're looking for glamour, glitz and classic films, this book is an absolute must.
