4.0 out of 5 stars Good Starter Book, 16 Aug 2003
By Robert Lederman (Frankfurt Germany) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This is an excellent book and I highly recommend it, but I hesitate to call it complete. I think its better to be viewed as a starter book. It gives you an excellent overview of all the different aspects of training a dog, but it doesn't go into much depth on any one subject. For example he talks about the importance of crate training but doesn't talk about how to deal with separation anxiety. In spite of this, if your looking for dog training book this one is worth buying.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must for anyone wishing to train their dog!, 3 Jun 2002
By A Customer
Another fantastic book by Bruce Fogle. This training manual is written clearly and concisely, with step-by-step, illustrated guides to many different exercises. It deals with the basics such as house training, walking on a lead, sit, down, stay etc and with more complex problems such as food guarding, aggression and chasing animals. A fantastic book and a definate must for anyone who is going to get a dog/puppy, has one already or is just interested in dog training. I couldn't live without it!!

2.0 out of 5 stars Basic training techniques with pretty illustrations, 11 Jun 2002
For the UK audience, if you are just beginning basic dog training, then this book might be useful. I was disappointed with the content, for the price I was expecting something with much more 'substance'. It can't seem to make up its mind whether to train with treats or with coersion. If you are looking for guidance on training techniques which don't use a degree of 'force' then this is not the book for you, try "So your dog's not Lassie". Because teaching retrieve by forcing the dog to hold the object only reinforces negative responses for many dogs, (I know, I've been there) and there are more positive, helpful books out there. Little is made of the need to reinforce each good response on the part of the dog with a happy reaction and praise plus treats.

I suppose it's a step further along the road then the old German method we adopted after the First World War! This is the only training book I have returned and I'm doing that because I'm disappointed with it, but what's one man's meat is another man's poison. However, if you do want to buy this book, buy the RSPCA version which has exactly the same cover so is probably the same book, but it's £3.00 cheaper!!!
