Product Description

This ecodirectory and visual sourcebook aims to be a blueprint for organic living, which looks at the benefits of going organic in every sphere of our daily lives. It goes beyond food and drink to include health, beauty, gardening, home and babycare.

From the Author

Why I wrote this book
Organic Living is a book that will, I hope, change your life for the better, one that I genuinely hope will enable everyone who reads it to make positive, feel- good (or at least better) choices whether it be food or banking, or simply choosing a more environementally friendly washing powder. It's a book about the organic ethos - by which I mean a philosophy based on natural, caring and sustainable solutions , where man and his planet can live in more harmony with each other, and where respect rather than domination is the guiding force. If that sounds a bit idealistic, good, because it is one of the reasons I wrote the book. I believe passionately that the organic way is about moving forward and finding new and better solutions; that it does offer a modern, progressive ,truly sustainable blueprint for the 21st century; and that it works.

I wrote the book for three other reasons. Firstly, pictures speak a thousand words. The opportunity to write a Dorling Kindersley book, full of wonderful visionary pictures that show what I feel and what I know in my work as an organic journalist to be true, was too good an opportunity to miss. Secondly, I also believe passionately that the 21st century belongs to the consumer . The difference between us now and the last century is that for the first time we are actively shaping our consumer destiny and making our voices felt, rather than just accepting whatever somebody else said we wanted. Greener, cleaner, safer, better alternatives are now ours. We have that choice and, as the debate over GM foods has shown, we can change things if we want. Thirdly, and more prosaically, I wanted to show that the organic revolution is a worldwide phenomeon. I wanted to record some of its successes and to dispel the myth once and for all that's it all muck and magic, or niche, or any of that. It's for everyone and the more of us get on board in whatever way we want (the other point of the book: for example, just buying organic yoghurt and milk may not sound like much but it will not only secure an organic dairy market, but have a huge impact on the way conventional dairy farming will shape itself in future) - the more secure all our futures will be. As I wrote in the introduction, whoever and wherever we are, we and our planet deserve nothing less.

In short, I wrote the book to pass on the inspiration and excitment I and many others feel about the organic revolution ,and the potential it has for all of us. I sincerely hope you enjoy it and that some of that inspirational organic magic may rub off onto you, too.

4.0 out of 5 stars A great guide to all areas of organic choices available, 30 April 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Planet Organic: Organic Living (Paperback)
The look of the book is enough to make you want to change to all-organic living. There's plenty of beautiful pictures to accompany the many interesting details about why it's important to make the step to live organically. Certainly it's crucial that we all start caring more deeply about the planet, and our own ability to have an effect on its future. The contact details at the back of the book are particularly useful for finding out where you can get organic food locally, or ordering products over the internet or mail order.
