4.0 out of 5 stars An ideal introduction to northern Italy, 21 Jul 2001

(REAL NAME)
This is an easy to find your way round, easy to look at and easy on the brain guide book. These are really it's strengths and it's also one guide book that you can almost read as you go along. Don't just do this however as the Hotel recommendations are worth investigating before you book. This series has never let us down with either restaurants, cafes or Hotels. The history section helps set this region in context, although it does not give many clues to the Politics of the area, unlike the Rough Guide series. The maps are clear, illustrations absorbing and it is particularly good about the Regions Food and Drink, which is,of course fundamental to any visit to Italy. The city guide is quite comprehensive and would perhaps give enough information for a second visit but the Lakes section is rather more sketchy. I have not yet found the perfect book for accompanying Travellers to the Lakes and I would most definitely recommend this for the first visit.Subsequent trips would require a whole library covering villas, gardens and the yet to be written Special Events i. e. festas, sagras and Saints Days. These are not however, peculiar to this beautiful area of Italy. Perhaps where this book lets the Traveller down somewhat is that it gives no hint of the industry and commerce that lies between Milan and the Lakes and inded comes very close to polluting a good deal of this enchanting area. Don't let this put you off, it makes the perfect companion to the Rough Guide of Italy which you should read well before you go, but take this one with you.

1.0 out of 5 stars Just Milan, 22 Jan 2003
By A Customer
I purchased this book with a view to visiting only Bergamo and Lake Garda, unfortunately Lake Garda warrants only one page and Bergamo is not covered, I suggest the book is should just be called Milan.
