Product Description

Product Description

Open the pages of this guide and you uncork the exciting world of wine. Award-winning wine writer Joanna Simon steers the reader through a tantalizing range of styles, grape varieties and wine-producing regions and offers refreshingly down-to-earth advice on how to buy, taste, serve and store wine for maximum enjoyment. Most of us would like to try a wider range of wines but are perhaps reluctant to make an expensive mistake. Joanna Simon helps readers to experiment with confidence and taste new wines that are similar to those they already enjoy. So for instance, if you like Australian Chardonnay, you may also like white wines from Navarra in Spain, Chilean Semillon, or South African Chenin Blanc. Covering over 70 grape varieties, the typical flavours of key varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Riesling are examined in depth. There are expert tips on buying, storing and tasting wine, along with advice on food and wine pairings, essential vintage charts, a glossary of terms and a useful pronunciation guide. Sumptuous location photography of the vineyards, wineries and cellars perfectly captures the miraculous process that turns the humble grape into something spectacular in the glass.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Sunday Times Book Of Wine, 31 Aug 2002
By A Customer
This book is an excellent all rounder. If your looking to broaden your knowledge of wine this is the book for you. It treats the subject in a down to earth way and avoids the closed shop exclusivity that can sometime be found in works of this type. It takes you through the basics, gives a few suggestion of food matches, explains the process of wine making, helps you decipher labelling and more.

The best way to know if a wine book is good is to take a wine you like and see if it matches what you think. In my case it did. The section on French regional wines is good if a little brief but then this book intends to cover world wines and as such cannot go into details.

I have witheld the five star award because it lacks some of the detail of regional wines, I feel it could add a little more. That aside this is an excellent book and a worthy starting point if you want to learn about wine.
