1.0 out of 5 stars save your money, 7 Nov 2001
By A Customer
...it contains sumptuous pictures - and very little else. If you want a sophisticated kid's book, buy it. If you want a valuable reference, forget it: this book is too superficial.

Some of the chapters e.g. beekeeping convey little more information than the title of the chapter (Beekeeping is the keeping of bees).

Very disappointing from DK and more akin to, though less informative than, books by their imitating publishers.

5.0 out of 5 stars A (very) close match to the "classic", 9 Nov 2002
Despite (or perhaps because of...) its more 'modernized' looks (excellent photos and eye-catching drawings) I really think this one is quite comparable (if not better) to John Seymour's "bible", Self-Sufficiency (and some of you must forgive me for the heresy!)
Anyway, you can always couple Heyney's with Seymour's, both typical of DK's design, perhaps the former being more 'graphic' and the latter more 'juicy'.

A very good buy indeed.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good introduction for dreamers, 1 Jun 2002
By A Customer
This is an excellent book for dreamers and those wishing to know what the good side of farming is. Is it a book filled with optimism and pretty pictures. So for those pragmatic farmers who need real-world information, look elsewhere. But if all you want is to be just that, a home farmer, who doesn't have to make a living off the land, then this is indeed an excellent book which will give you inspiration.
