5.0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT BOOK, 20 Jul 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Caring for Your Dog (Hardcover)
THIS BOOK IS FIRST CLASS. A CLEARLY WRITTEN WELL ILLUSTRATED BOOK, IT COVERS ALL ASPECTS OF DOG AILMENTS. WHEN I RECEIVED IT, I WAS SURPRISED AT HOW READABLE IT WAS AND HAVE READ MOST OF IT. THE AUTHOR DOES NOT USE TERMS WHICH ONLY A VET WOULD UNDERSTAND, BUT USES SIMPLE TERMS. IT STARTS BY ADVISING HOW TO MAKE THE RIGHT CHOICE WHEN PURCHASING A PUPPY AND ENDS WITH A SECTION ON THE PROBLEMS OF ELDERLY DOGS. IT IS DIVIDED INTO SECTIONS FOR VARIOUS PROBLEMS: TUMOURS, SKIN AND HAIR, EYES AND VISION ETC. EACH SECTION HAS A QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS COLUMN. THERE IS A FIRST AID AND EMERGENCY SECTION PACKED WITH EXCELLENT INFORMATION. I FOUND IT MOST INTERESTING, AND WOULD RECOMMEND IT TO ANY CARING DOG OWNER.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fabulous book, if there were a 10 star this book would reach it!!, 16 Sep 2008

This review is from: Caring for Your Dog (Paperback)
Of all the books i've purchased, (and there are a few!!) this is my favourite, it covers EVERYTHING you need to choose, raise and train your pup, even covers an extensive first aid section, and sections covering dog ailments, and anatomical aspects of behaviour and illnesses. It covers the anatomy (not too in depth to be confusing)in understandable ways with diagrams where needed, and the snippets in the borders, that give you a sort of Q and A have been great for summerising a topic. I can't begin to tell you how great this book is, if you need a book with an easily understandable text, but also a great reference section (as i always know the information as i've read it, but find it frustrating trying to find the reference to back up the answer for my coursework when i know i've read it in a specific book but due to a poor, or a lack of reference it can't be found and waste hours re-reading the same section to find the justification). This book is for both the general dog owner, and for people studying for dog related qualifications. As usual Bruce Fogle imparts his pearls of wisdom, simply, without waffle or unneccessary techincal jargon if a dog owner could only have one book this would be my choice.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very informative, 10 Aug 2009
This review is from: Caring for Your Dog (Paperback)
This has a huge amount of info on all aspects of the canine body and health. It really is majority about the different diseases etc that dogs can get/suffer from and diagnosis/possible treatment of these...so if you are just looking for a kind of general "how to" groom, feed etc type book, then this is not really it (the title is slightly misleading from this aspect)...although it does contain some of this type of info, it is really all about the health aspects. It has a very good quick reference section for symptoms at the front and the book is logically split into i.e. ears & hearing, eyes and eyesight, repiratory system, cardiovascular system etc etc and then the diseases/illnesses broken down within this. Some nice diagrams of the canine body too (i.e. eyeball, skeleton, muscles). Finally there is a good first aid section at the back.

The only thing I would say is that for someone who hasn't owned a dog before for instance, this could be quite overwhelming and lead you to panic about what your dog could have, so I would recommend you really do only use this as a guide and discuss with your vet immediately if you think there is something wrong with your dog rather than trying to self-diagnose via the book and then worrying about it!

But a great reference book if you are looking for something that goes a bit further than your usual basic dog health books.
