4.0 out of 5 stars Covers all aspects of the guitar from beginner to advanced, 12 Sep 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: The Complete Guitarist (Hardcover)
This book starts at the beginning even going into what effect pedals do and the names of guitar parts. However there are plenty of topics for advanced users. The book is well set out and has good information for those wanting scales, modes and chords with enough theory thrown to get you going. Good introduction to aspects like pick diagrams for classical guitar which you wouldn't expect in this type of book. All in all a pretty good book which presents the information in a very clear fashion. The downside would be that it covers too much in too little depth for many players. After over 30 years of playing I still found plenty of new stuff to keep me going.

3.0 out of 5 stars A good reference for the beginner, 13 Jun 2001
I bought this book as a complete novice player and found it covered the basics quite well. The illustrations are very good and it covers a wide veriety of styles, maybe too wide. If you want to be Jimmy Page or Noel Gallagher then don't bother with this book as it gives far too much space to classical and country styles and such like. Also I found the music theory parts made quite hard work of explaining the basics. The author obviously knows his stuff but getting it accross in a way that can be understood by a novice seems to be his biggest failing. There is also very little in the way of practical excersises which made it just a little frustrating when trying to put into practice what you had read.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Complete Guitarist, 23 May 2003
This review is from: The Complete Guitarist (Hardcover)
I recently purchased this book as a reference guide and it's turned out to be invaluable. To put it in context, I have played guitar for most of my 40 years of life and my playing is considered to be of professional standard - yet every time I pick this book up, I get something new. It goes to show that it doesn't matter how experienced you are, or how long you've been playing, how good or bad you are, every serious guitarist should have this book. The beauty of the guitar is that you never stoop learning and this book can only help players get more out of their intruments. I can see that for an absolute novice, the somewhat dry treatment of musical theory may be a bit daunting, but I didn;t find it a problem and in any event, is nothing a bit of perseverance wouldn't remedy. This one's a must-have.
