Product Description

Product Description

'Readers will enjoy Plowden's combination of a fine gift for storytelling with sound research and an infectious affection for her troop of intrepid ladies.' Miranda Seymour, Sunday Times. 'Our women are all on fire, striving through a gallant emulation to outdoe our men and will make good our yielding walls or loose their lives' wrote a chronicler of the siege of Chester in 1645. In the war between king and parliament, the women of England played an active part. Some displayed a courage so far above their sex as to suprise and disconcert their men. The Royalists included Queen Henrietta, who went abroad to raise money for the cause, and Mary Bankes who held Corfe Castle for the king with her daughters, heaving stones and hot embers over the battlements at the attacking Roundheads. On the opposing side, Lady Brillia Harley guarded Brampton Bryan Castle in Herefordshire against the Royalists and Anne Fairfax, wife of Cromwell's northern general, who was taken prisoner by the Duke of Newcastle's troops after Adwalton Moor. Also featured are the oyster wenches of London, who laboured beside the men digging trenches around the City; the women who helped prisoners escape, such as Anne Mu

2.0 out of 5 stars A disappointing work, 18 Jan 2005
This is, unfortunately, a rather weak work covering what should be an interesting topic. The main flaw is that, in spite of the fact that the book purports to tell the story of the range of women touched by the civil war, what it really does is glorify the Royalist cause over that of the Parliamentary side. The choice of extracts appears biased, with abundant accounts being given of Royalist heroines and a relatively small proportion of the book being devoted to their Parliamentarian counterparts. However, citation of contemporary sources is relatively sparse for a work of this sort, with those that do occur appearing to be heavily abridged. Time and again the female adherents of the Monarchy are portrayed as plucky defenders of liberty, valiantly standing up to the brutal Roundheads, whilst the Parliamentarians are repeatedly referred to in terms such as "fanatics" and "priggish". Royalist victories are revelled in, Parliamentary ones referred to disparagingly. In a revisionist piece of historical writing, the author attempts to make Queen Henrietta Maria a more sympathetic figure than she perhaps deserves, ignoring her arrogance and excusing the poor counsel she gave the King regarding his dealings with parliament. Overall, the sympathies of the author are all too apparent, leaving the work heavily flawed - it would perhaps have been stronger had she limited herself to a book outlining the Royalist viewpoint rather than merely paying lip service to the Parliamentarian side.
