Product Description

Product Description
D-Day's only Victoria Cross winner, Stanley Hollis was uniquely recommended for this coveted award twice on 6 June. A tough, working-class rebel, Hollis was no model soldier: he was forever being 'busted' to corporal for various misdemeanours, only to win his stripes back again. Few soldiers can have seen as much close combat action as Stanley Hollis. He fought with the Green Howards at Dunkirk, in the Western Desert, in Italy, on D-Day and through France and Germany to the end of the war. Seriously wounded and taken prisoner by the Afrika Korps, Hollis was personally congratulated by Rommel, then made a daring escape. In Italy, he was recommended for the Distinguished Conduct Medal and was later mentioned in despatches, going on to undertake a dangerous undercover reconnaissance of the Normandy invasion beaches. On 6 June 1944 Stanley Hollis was involved in two actions that led to his award. During the primary assault, Hollis single-handedly stormed a German pillbox, saving his company from certain injury and death and enabling them to open the main beach exit. Later that day he saved the lives of two comrades trapped by heavy gunfire in a collapsing house. Fully illustrated with archive photographs and ephemera, this unique biography of a little-known British Second World War hero shows the real man behind the heroic image. Mike Morgan has received the Hollis family's full co-operation and draws exclusively on personal diaries, letters and other memorabilia.

4.0 out of 5 stars An excellent read!, 14 Jan 2007

Published to coincide with the 60th anniversary of D-Day, this book tells the story of a tough Teeside working class rebel, who went on to win the nation's highest honour - the Victoria Cross.

Serving with The Green Howards in the Western Desert, Sicily and the Normandy Campaign, Company Sergeant Major Hollis led by example at all times, he was wounded and taken prisoner by the African Corps and was personally congratulated by Rommel himself, for the valour he had shown, before then going on to make a daring escape!

Winning the only Victoria Cross to be awarded for actions on D-Day, CSM Hollis actually took part in two V.C. actions, which saved the lives of numerous colleagues and left a vast number of the enemy dead. This real life hero was also recommended for the Distinguished Conduct Medal, a Military Medal and a Mention in Despatches!

This superb book, with , its many excellent archive photographs, also includes a very useful short history of The Green Howards, along with a list of the regiment's Second World War Gallantry Medal Winnners, the Gold Beach , (Normandy) Order of Battle and the regiment's Role of Honour for Normandy, therefore it represents excellent value for money and a very useful volume for any military historian, battlefield guide or relative researching a family member who served with this famous Yorkshire regiment at this crucial period of time in our history.

A terrific read! The fire-eating exploits of CSM Stanley Hollis V.C from Dunkirk to Normandy via "the bag" in N.Africa and blistering actions in Sicily are rendered with an accuracy and attention to detail seldom found. CSM Stanley Hollis comes to life within its pages and what we see is a rare man indeed. Using original material and the stories of those who knew Stanley Hollis best the author shows us a complex and fascinating character. A brilliant read which should remind us all of the significance of June 6th. 1944. A must read!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic, 10 Jun 2004
By A Customer
D-Day Hero is a fantastic book about a true British Hero. Company Sergeant Major Stanley Elton Hollis VC of the 6th battalion The Green Howards, was one fo those dauntless fighting men who without knowing it set a standard to which young soldiers can aspire to.
Author Mike Morgan has captured the feeling of apprehension, initiative and courage of the men involved in the D-Day landings, and the special character of the only man to be awarded the VC on D-Day.
Once again author Mike Morgan's tireless research has made D-Day Hero a really interesting and informative book to read.
