Product Description

Product Description

On the morning of 3 September 1939 the Prime Minister of Great Britain, Neville Chamberlain, announced that Britain was at war with Germany. Along with every other city in the country, Leicester was about to be plunged into almost six years of hardship and privation. This work tells the story of the war years in Leicester. It describes the meticulous planning of such men as Charles Keene, chairman of the Emergency Committee, and of the air raids that demolished many parts of the city - claiming 122 victims and injuring almost 300 more. It describes the hardships brought about by years of rationing and blackouts, and also the story of everyday life in Leicester during this extraordinary period.

5.0 out of 5 stars A good read - full of interesting anecdotes., 23 May 2007

(REAL NAME)
Ben Beazley's "Wartime Leicester" is a valuable and welcome contribution to the history of Leicester's experience of the Second World War, within a standard national historical context. Contained within, Ben covers in great detail the major aspects such as the Council's preparation to the build up to the war, the establishment of the various civil defence organisations, rationing, and the organizing of incoming evacuees from other parts of the country.

Ben has approached this subject from a distinctly 'socio-economical' context, which provides the reader with detailed accounts of the expenditure of resources to help maintain the everyday functions of the city, during this potential time of economical hardship. He also clearly list's the people of influence in the city, who helped structure and organise the various Civil Defence organisations, and the plans for the city during and after the war.

My only criticism is that the chapter on the blitz is a little out dated, and supporting photographs are somewhat limited to the Cavendish Road raid. There is also a distinct lack of coverage of the U.S. 82nd Airborne presence in the city, which I feel was a missed opportunity to elucidate this arguably 'glamorous' aspect of the city's past. However, this can be forgiven due to the excellent anecdotes of certain characters in the city, and various newsworthy events, which took place in the city during the war.

This book will be of significant interest to anyone who has an interest in how Leicester people coped with rationing, and it's associated black market activity; and anyone interested in knowing who was who, in the positions of influence (Councillors and Mayors, etc...)
This book also provides some amazing photos from both the Leicester Mercury and the Leicestershire Records Office archives.

Overall, a valuable contribution for anyone interested in reading Leicester's history, during the Second World War.
