Product Description

Product Description
This biography reveals the life of Anna Sewell (1820-1878), the author of the classic children's novel "Black Beauty". "Black Beauty" is among the top ten best selling novels for children ever written, a book which actively changed the way people think about animals. But who was the woman who wrote this famous work? Born in Norfolk, and raised in the Quaker faith, Anna showed an early interest in natural history and was a keen rider, but, aged 14, an accident left her permanently disabled. She wrote "Black Beauty" from 1871 to 1877, at first dictating to her mother from the sofa on which she lay. Pirated in America in 1890 - where it was sold as "The Uncle Tom's Cabin of the Horse", its sales broke publishing records. Sewell lived just long enough to know of her novel's success. This biography reveals the life of Anna Sewell: her experiences, her beliefs and the sympathy with animals and their suffering that drove her to write her famous work.

About the Author
Adrienne E. Gavin is principal lecturer in Victorian Studies at the University of Canterbury, where she teaches and publishes in Victorian literature, children's literature and women's writing. She is an expert on Sewell and wrote the entries for Anna Sewell and for her mother, the poet Mary Sewell, for the New Dictionary of National Biography (forthcoming 2004)

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Brilliant, 12 Dec 2005

The research that must have gone into this book is outstanding. This book had a real effect on me and as soon as I had finished the last page I wanted to start reading it again. Anna Sewell and her family were extremely kind people and it's a pity that Anna didn't live long enough to see the effect her "little book" had on the way people treated horses. Anna and her mother, Mary, are a true inspiration! Highly recommended for any Black Beauty fans and recommended for anyone interested in Victorian life.

5.0 out of 5 stars An engrossing biography, 22 Nov 2004
By EJ Beasley (Kent, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Anyone who has enjoyed 'Black Beauty' as a child should read this fascinating biography of Anna Sewell, 'the ultimate in metaphorical dark horses'. The book charts Anna's family background and Quaker upbringing; the fall which left her lame for life; her invalidism and the subsequent numerous methods of treatment and cures which were attempted; and her love of horses and the freedom she was able to experience in riding. It details Anna's often painful spiritual journey through religious faith and doubt; her close relationship with her mother, Mary Sewell, who was at the time a well-known author herself; and the charitable works and projects they undertook together. The text contains frequent references to and quotations from a variety of sources, which adds to rather than distracts from the narrative, providing an easy and engrossing read as well as a vivid account of Victorian life.
