Product Description
Synopsis
Elizabeth I, the "People's Queen", reigned over an exciting new age of exploration, discovery, artistic brilliance, architectural achievement and foreign conquest. An unmarried queen in a male-dominated age, she surrounded herself with the ablest, most energetic and fearless minds in the kingdom, constantly inspiring and encouraging them. This work opens with an overview of the reigns of the first four Tudor monarchs and the author emphasizes just how much England was in need of a strong charismatic ruler, particularly after the disastrous reign of "Bloody Mary". Subsequent chapters examine the make-up of the royal court and the personality of Elizabeth herself, showing how her perilous path to the throne taught her much which was to stand her in good stead as Queen. The main focus of the book is Elizabeth's relationships with key men in her kingdom - statesmen such as William Cecil and Francis Walsingham; seafarers and explorers such as Francis Drake and Walter Raleigh; suitors such as Robert Dudley and Christopher Hatton; men of God such as Matthew Parker and John Whitgift; scholars such as Roger Asham and Francis Bacon; and creators such as John Donne and William Shakespeare.

Peter Brimacombe outlines the achievements of each, revealing above all, the Queen's superb judgement of human nature.

4.0 out of 5 stars The men who helped sculpt England's Golden Age, 28 Jan 2001
By A Customer
Despite the fact that the sixteenth century was an age of queens, it remains an undisputable fact that the corridors of power, the ways to God and the paths of exploration were trod exclusively by male feet. Elizabeth herself was no reformer - she would not have wanted it any other way.

Brimacomb's fascinating spotlight on the men who helped to fashion Elizabethan England does not attempt to undermine the sovereign power weilded by the monarch, doubt her extrodinairy political acumen and intelligence or revise the notion that Elizabeth was instrumental in defining the era. Quite the opposite; the book demonstrates that Elizabeth's acute perceptive ability to read character and understand human nature enabled her to promote and patronise the key players from the wealth of talent, ability and vision prevalent in Tudor England.

All the Queens Men examines different aspects of Elizabethan life from goverment, Church and the court to education, the arts and exploration giving sketches of the men who played prominent roles in their development. Giants like William Cecil, Francis Drake and Shakespeare sit alongside lesser know individuals whose contributions may have been none the less important.

No book on Elizabethan men would be complete without reference to her suitors and her enemies, and they are brought to life in mini biographies of the Earl of Leister, Phillip of Spain and the Earl of Essex along with all the plotters and subversives who cropped up at various intervals in Elizabeth's reign.

A well written book full of relevant illustrations, this book is essential for anyone wanting to learn of the fascinating chracters that make up England's Golden Age.
