Product Description

Product Description

In 1919, Reginald Fleming Johnston became tutor to the last emperor of China. This was the beginning of an extraordinary friendship which ultimately lead to mutual betrayal: Johnston's writings about their relationship unwittingly condemned Pu Yi as a willing tool of the Japanese during World War II; while the emperor, facing possible execution for war crimes, effectively called his former tutor a liar and his book a fabrication. This biography examines Johnston's life, from his early travels in and studies of China as a young employee of the colonial service, to his six years as tutor and confidante to the young emperor, where he witnessed the country slide into ruin and war, and finally, his last days on the Scottish island of Eilean Righ.

4.0 out of 5 stars Reginald Johnston in the fall of the Dragon Throne, 28 Aug 2002
By Mr J Watson (Tunbridge Wells, Kent United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
The biography is superb in dispelling the myths that Johnston himself created in his own book 'Twilight in the Forbidden City.' Whilst his own book is both hugely compelling and unique, it is so biased that its accuracy must be questioned. The biography of Reginald Johnston brushes away the cobwebs of a man, who whilst fiercely loyal and scholarly, was not ideally placed to comment on the grassroot beliefs of the five groups living under the Manchu Emperor. It is an excellent examination of the character of Mr Johnston and therefore helps in understanding the psychology behind his own book. Perhaps most importantly though, the biography gives the reader a sense that there was much more going on in revolutionary China that Johnston was simply not interested in knowing about. If anything, the book balances Johnston's own bias against the simple fact that he could not have known everything about the political situation in China and thus exposes the flaws in his own book. Johnston was a foreigner and as a foreigner he was simply unable to grasp the intricate politics of such an huge nation as China, the biographer beautifully exposes this fact. For those particularly interested in this era of Chinese history but who have to rely on accounts such as Johnston's, this biography will illustrate the need to step carefully around revolutionary politics, that are, invariably, highly emotive to those recording them.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Very Good Read - Highly Recommended, 19 Mar 2001
By A Customer
This book is a biography of Reginald Fleming Johnston ,who was the tutor to the Dragon Emperor of China : Aisin Gioro Pu Yi ,who ended up being the very last emperor of China . The book focuses on not only Johnston's life ,but aspects of Chinese history such as the opium war , the revolution and the flight of Pu Yi from the Forbidden City to the Japanes Legation . If you liked this book ,try 'Twilight In The Forbidden City ' by Johnston himself which very accurately chronicles the revolution and history of the very turbulant period of 1898 to 1928 in Chinese history .
