4.0 out of 5 stars Totally fascinating account of hebal medicine, 6 Mar 2002
By A Customer
The writer covers the topic with great detail and insight. Using personal accounts from the many people she has interviewed she makes the subject come alive. The premise that many traditional remedies were never written down as they were taken for granted as common knowledge is explored, along with variations in the remedies and uses of herbs depending on factors such as social class and region of the country. Many amusing and entertaining ancedotes. Well illustrated.
A fascinating read on a fascinating topic.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating and entertaining, 16 Jul 2009

(REAL NAME)
Hatfield (who has recently published new work on herbal folklore) has written here an interesting account of the use of herbal medicine throughout history, providing an entertaining read and a window into the lives of our ancestors, including the superstitions and folk beliefs they held and how these tied into health. Its particularly interesting to see how we still use some of the herbs mentioned in here for the same uses! Worth adding to the bookshelf of any lover of medicine, herbal or not, just for the sheer fascination of it.
