This is in my opinion the best of all the many volumes of photographs of Southend now available. The author has used old photographs and then, with great skill, taken "todays" photograph from the same position. For lovers of Southend the results confirm just how gracious and interesting a place the old town was. It also demonstrates starkly just how the elected vandals on the council ripped the heart out of the town during the late sixties and substituted concrete slabs for fascinating buildings. The despoilation of the heart of the town, Victoria Circus, with its well loved arcades was a particular act of mindless municipal vandalism and Ken Crowe's book shows this well. Instead of a well planned centre with human scale buildings a visitor to the town is faced with perhaps the most revoltingly ugly multi story car park ever foisted on a town. The motivation for such destruction is almost impossible to conceive. Ken Crowe's use of the original photographs side by side with the modern scene remind us all just what was lost to the greed of speculators and the stupidity of those whose duty was to protect and preserve the town. A book worth every penny of its surprisingly affordable price.
