Product Description

Product Description

When war was declared in 1939, the British Army was very much the "cinderella" of the three armed services. Its total strength was some 865,000 men with many of the 325,000 regular field force being spread far and wide across the British Empire. The rest were mainly enthusiastic Territorials who were equipped with outdated weapons and equipment, together with newly called-up Militiamen and Special Reservists. This book aims to present a balanced and comprehensive picture of the British Army in wartime from the early days of the BEF, through the years of defeat and struggle in the early 1940s, culminating in the eventual Allied victory in 1945 in which the men and women of the British Army and their Commonwealth comrades played such an important part. This handbook gives full details of mobilization and training, higher organization and arms of the service; divisional organizations and non-divisional units; HQs and Staff; the combat arms and the services; the individual soldier, his weapons and equipment based on that used in 1944; tactics; weapons, vehicles and equipment; vehicle markings and camoflage; the ATS and other Womens' Corps.

4.0 out of 5 stars A very useful volume at a very affordable price!, 8 April 2007

Military Historians, Militaria collectors and Family History Researchers with an interest in the British Army in the Second World War cannot go far wrong by buying this superb value for money volume, as I am sure it will be invaluable in their research whatever it might be now and in years to come.

In common with the other titles in this excellent series of books from Sutton, this volume is once packed to the hilt with a wealth of very readable information, therefore providing the reader with a comprehensive overview of the British Army during one of the crucial periods in our history. There is no doubt, that this excellent work is the result of a vast amount of research by the author- who as an ex-army officer himself, certainly knows his stuff and has therefore succeeded where many have failed in producing a volume that, although it does not profess to cover everything about the British Army, has gone most of the way towards that task!

This soft-back volume covers details of mobilisation and training, unit formations, headquarters structure as well as weapons and equipment, however it also includes chapters on tactics plus so much more. I personally think it is worth the price for the numerous photographs alone and although they, along with the maps and diagrams etc. are black and white, they do not detract from the quality of the publication.

If you have the slightest interest in the British Army, this is a book for you and at under fifteen pounds, is a good investment.

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic Reference, 24 Sep 2003

George Forty has provided anyone interested in military history with an essential reference to the British Army in WW2. I discovered this book by accident whilst browsing and I have found it a constant source of facts and information. It has a relaxed easy to follow style and is illustrated with unique material that you will not find elsewhere. It picks up where others in this genre finish. My only regret is that George Forty has yet to take on a similar task for the German Army as material in that arena is simply not up to the quality of this book. No stone is left unturned. I strongly recommend this book to anyone with an interest in either WW2 or the British Army in general.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Reference, 16 Nov 2004

An excellent tome for those seeking to find out that little bit more onthe organisation or the British Army in World War II. I am surprised the author chose not to illustrate the army/corps/divisional insignia in colour. I bought this book to help fill out a few blanks but ironically the same blanks are here by the author's own admission. Don't let this detract you from buying th book though, it is a sound investment for anyone seeking to study this period of British military organisation. I think this book covers about 95% of what any researcher is looking for which is an excellent standard.
