From the Back Cover

Presents research into the differences in boy's and girl's experiences of the reading and writing curriculum at home and in school. The book is presented in three sections: an outline of the theoretical debates on gender difference and academic achievement; a description of the research into these issues conducted by the author; and an analysis of the author's findings. In discussing the outcome of her research, the author aims to highlight further areas for more detailed study and makes recommendations for the development of literacy policies, which cross curriculum boundaries in schools.

From the beginning of the social interaction that comes with full-time schooling, girls and boys in the same classroom have been shown to create quite different educational experiences for themselves (Arnot and Weiner, 1987; Walkerdine, 1989; Delamont, 1990). Read the first page

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent read for teachers!, 11 Nov 2000
An absolute must for both primary and secondary teachers. The book shows the apparent differences between the Literacy skills and attitudes of boys and girls. Some very useful research for student teachers too!

2.0 out of 5 stars Spoiled by appalling editing, 10 Feb 2007
By Blencathra (West Yorkshire.) - See all my reviews
The content of this book is excellent. However, especially given that this is a book on literacy, the standard of editing is absolutely appalling. Errors abound, to the extent that it almost felt like one couldn't read a page without finding some sort of error. Examples (just a few up to the end of the first chapter - there are plenty of others):

1) p.xi: "and; thirdly...."
2) p.3: "and the contrasts between the girls' and boys' performance was..."
3) p.13: "the differences in reading choice is...."
4) p.14 "Department Education and Science"
5) p. 16 "Steedman's subsequent analysis of the three girls' stories, reveals..."
6) p.16 "The grater willingness..."
7) p. 17 "The Ofsted Report, Boys and English (1993), cited the 1991 examination statistics support this:....."
8) p. 17 "she would posses..."
9) p. 24 "The only way of being a masculine man is seems to be becoming a failed masculine man..."

These come along with reams of punctuation marks both wrongly and badly used (parenthetic commas missing a partner, semi-colons where colons should be, comma splices). In all, my reading of what would otherwise have been useful and interesting work was totally ruined by these distractions. I struggled to finish it.
