Product Description
This book details UK regulations on testing electrical equipment. The legal requirements for regular testing of all electrical equipment in work environments and public places have made testing a major growth area for electricians over recent years. Many staff without electrical training, such as maintenance staff and caretakers, are also being nominated by their employers to carry out electrical safety testing.

This book is ideal for electricians administering PAT, and non-specialists following a City & Guilds course. It has been written specifically to meet the demands of the City & Guilds 2377 exam, and is the only available text for this course. Brian Scaddan is a Chief Examiner and Honorary Member of City and Guilds. He has over 20 years' experience in Further Education, and is now Director of Brian Scaddan Associates, Engineering Training Consultants. i bought this along with the IEE code of practice for in service inspection and testing of electrical equipment, in preparation for the c&g2377 exam. (i have worked in industry for many years as a domestic appliance engineer for bosch siemens and electrolux and have just got a job PAT testing for a local college - hence why i am sitting the exam)i think the main problem of the book is it tries to be a bit of everything, without focusing specifically on key areas. the book constantly makes reference to the code of practice (which you will need so save your money and just buy that instead) and is not comprehensive enough to even answer all the example questions in the back of the book. two key points 1)the book makes no reference as far as i recall to the labelling of appliances tested. 2) on the subject of touch current, the author makes the excuse 'the exact method of conducing this test is not at all clear in the code of practice, and as it is quite unusual to perform such a test in normal circumstances it has been omitted from this volume'(page36). i confess the reference to protective conductor/touch current measuremnt in the code of practice isn't very clear, however i understood it after reading it through a couple of times! (it's simply refering to what used to be known as earth leakage current) Not at all what i would expect from a chief examiner and honary member of the city & guilds who runs pat testing courses!

Several mistakes in the sample questions and answers. Never mind, we are only dealing with electricity! This from a C&G chief examiner? Better to buy the IEE Code of Practice instead.

A good solid basis on which to learn about In service testing. This book gives you the basics of the subject, including legislation as well as actual testing. It would be an advantage to read the IEE guidelines subsequent to the book. All in all a handy reference book for quick check backs and decent refresher quiz on relevant questions.
