Product Description

Martin White, EContent & Intranets, December 2004

"...an excellent book, full of practical examples including the
diagnostic and modelling tools as an appendix."

Review

"...Information First provides easily understandable material, which could be filleted and presented to senior management in order to provoke thinking about the importance and value of information"
Information World Review Jul-Aug 2004

"Information management is a key focus item for most large companies and corporations, and there is surprisingly little published information in the area. Most material seems to focus either on IT or on Knowledge Management. The approach of focusing on 'information' rather than 'IT Architecture' or 'Knowledge Management' is quite original, and provides a very strong viewpoint that is complimentary to much of the already published material in this broad field."

Ian Bowring, IBM Ireland

"Information First shows how improved information architecture allows organisations to take change in stride and serve their stakeholders far more effectively. Its practical focus and self- assessment tools help readers move from theory to action."

Charles Bowen, Technical Architect, Fidelity Information Services, US.

"The mix of case studies and guidelines shows how to architect an information model that harmonises the language used by people working in an organisation. An integrated architecture allows us to align different views of our organisation and to talk in a consistent way about how we want to change and manage our business to meet new challenges. The architecture enables our organisation to understand the implications, impact and cost of changes and to design value adding solutions.

This book is an excellent introduction to the subject of information architecture and will be useful to any large organisation that plans to build towards consistency rather than perpetuating a stovepipe mentality."

Neil Phillips, Head of Process Architecture, Barclays Bank PLC

5.0 out of 5 stars Practical, concise and a must for anyone using information, 24 Sep 2003
By A Customer
I would recommend this book to anyone who works with information. There are plenty of books about technical architectures, and I've looked at books on enterprise architecture, data architecture, business architecture and process architecture - but they all end up talking about technology. This book is different. It's the first one that I've come across that really deals with information. It starts from the premise that information is a resource, but that most organizations don't have the infrastructure to look after it as such. I liked the eight factors that the book is based around as these really tied in with my experience and makes the whole process easier to understand. There are plenty of practical tips, with lots of examples and case studies that explain clearly how to use the techniques. Unlike many books that I read, this one is grounded in reality; the authors have obviously used these techniques, and they are explained so that anyone could use them. I also liked the simplicity of this approach; it isn't based on the use of a specific piece of software, and the ideas would be useful for anyone from a business or IT background if they wanted to really make use of corporate information.

5.0 out of 5 stars At last, a book about information, not data!, 27 Sep 2003
By Neil Phillips (Daventry, United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
This book is an excellent introduction to the subject of information architecture and will be useful to any large organisation that plans to build towards consistency rather than perpetuating a stovepipe mentality.

The mix of case studies and guidelines shows how to architect an information model that harmonises the language used by people working in an organisation - no mean feat for a large decentralised organisation. An integrated information architecture, as proposed by the authors, allows companies to align different views of their organisation and to talk in a consistent way about how they want to change and manage their business to meet new challenges. The architecture enables an organisation to understand the implications, impact and cost of proposed changes and to design value adding solutions.
