Product Description

This handbook summarizes concisely, in diagrams and brief explanations, all elements of construction. Practice, techniques, components and procedures are clearly defined with supplementary references to regulations and relevant standards. This fourth edition has been extensively updated. In particular the section on thermal insulation has been substantially expanded and updated to take into account changes in Part L of the Building Regulations "Conservation of Fuel and Power." All sections have been updated to include reference to revised British and European Standards, regulations and legislation. Further references and explanations have been added to aid the reader's understanding. This should be a useful text for all students of construction and related subjects and is a valuable reference text for construction professionals.

5.0 out of 5 stars Construction bible..., 28 Nov 2003
By Mr A. M. Avery (Romford, Essex United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
This book is one of three that should be in any student engineers library. For any one who is fresh to the industry or needs a reminder, this book offers all the facts and knowledge that you would need, and handyly refers to the building regulations where necessary.
The pictures are superb for what they try to convey, and it doesn't contain any useless information that is likely to confuse you with.
A superb buy...
And the other two books.... Building Regualtions in Brief, and the Metric Handbook are must haves for design of anything...

5.0 out of 5 stars The building construction bible, 21 Jul 2001
By jwilco@aol.com (Lincolnsire) - See all my reviews
This handbook, affectionately referred to in schools and colleges around the UK as "The Chudley", has been released and rereleased several times now, each becoming more useful and detailed than the other. It is undoubtedly one of the most informative, simple and well-illustrated construction manuals money can buy. Each and every page is adorned by a well drawn and easy to follow diagram, complete with annotation and headed under titles well catalogued in its index section. It is of infinate use to anyone within the industry, whether a student or fully qualified engineer, as anything from a learning textbook to a handy reference manual. It incorporates current building and construction regulations, ensuring that the information contained is always up to date and accurate against the ever changing construction laws active today. It covers the basics of everything from site administration and layout, through to basic types and forms of structure and culminating in details of eaves, foundations, fixtures and fittings, finishes and equipment. Laid out in a simple manner; General (regulations, documents etc.), Site works, Builders plant, Substructure and Superstructure, Internal works and Domestic services, it provides a quick to find reference to almost every aspect of construction. One point worth noting however, is that it does not deal with aspects in pages upon pages of writing. Whether a good point or a bad, its brief, basic manner ensures that a wide range of topics can be covered without endless jargon and explanation or volume upon volume. In short, it is an invaluable source of reference no engineer or craftsman should be without. It comprises to make one of the easiest to read and user friendly manuals around; without a doubt a real gem.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent and informative, 24 Sep 2001
By Jacki (East Sussex) - See all my reviews
This book (albeit an earlier copy that I bought in about 1990) was my bible while I was at university studying architecture, and after losing it in the Lewes floods, I realised just how much I missed it so am delighted to have just bought the most uptodate copy. The book is full of useful details and the emphasise is on details rather than lots of text so it is much easier to follow.
I would recommend this book to anyone in the architectural/building trade as it is invaluable.
