Product Description

Product Description
PRINCE (Projects in Controlled Environments) is the standard project management method for government IT departments, approved by the CCTA. Powerful and flexible, it is increasingly being used by private and public sector companies. SSADM (Structered System Analysis Design Methodology) is the set of application development procedures and techniques approved by the CCTA, so it is certain that PRINCE and SSADM work well together. This text is aimed at readers who want to learn about the PRINCE Version 2 method, intend to implement it, are the clients of a contractor who will use, it or will participate in a project being managed by it. This second edition covers all the changes to the PRINCE methodology in Version 2, relates the five PRINCE components to the practical issues of setting up and running a project, and provides a clear picture of how using PRINCE provides a business-like start to a project, ensuring its viability and the effective use of resources before large scale expenditure has taken place. The book covers the main management concerns about a project - project initiation, controlling products, quality, changes and project closure; and concludes with a description of the normal products of an IT project, sample forms which can be used in the various PRINCE components, and role descriptions to fit all the defined roles.

2.0 out of 5 stars The least practical book you'll ever read, 1 Jul 2004
Despite the title, you can expect nothing in the way of how to run a Prince2 project. As the chief examiner for the Prince2 exams, he probably had a lot of input into the course book. Shame, because he simply regurgitates it here. There are a mere 2 real world examples given, one of which is how to book a restuarant...
Worse still, the writing is terrible. He's obtuse, humourless and characterless. It makes for slow reading, and without any real practical advice, it can be a struggle to make it to the end.
Finally, the index has been corrected, only for him to miss out a couple of appendices. Nice touch.
It avoids 1 star because in conjunction with the handbook, there are some useful nuggets here, especially about cost benefit analysis. However, they're so few and far between, I'd give it a wide birth.

2.0 out of 5 stars Er, where's the project management?, 16 Jul 2002
Ironic that a book professing the all-seeing, omnipresent wizardry of PRINCE 2 didn't itself take heed to the section on project control. Quite obviously this book was published in such a rush that they left the proof-reading to...well, I don't think they actually did it at all. There is no table of contents and the index is full of errors completely unsatisfactory. The Quality, Cost and Time Triangle should be renamed 'crap we're running out of time, just publish the thing, what's proof-reading?'. The layout of the book is bad and hard to follow with no indication of where things should be found or coherence of pregression. It's only after a couple of hours trying to work out how the book is structured that you start to get a feel for how to use it. Otherwise the content is good and fairly comprehensive, except the two-line paragraphs on 'Small Projects' which basically all read 'don't ignore the above on your small projects'! Thanks for the advice, big help!

3.0 out of 5 stars A good book made average by an incorrect index, 11 Feb 2002
By A Customer
This is a good reference for PRINCE2, or at least it would be if the index didn't appear to come from a version of the book that was nearly 100 pages shorter.

If you never use an index, then consider this a 4 star review, but if -- like me -- you need an index to use a reference book on a daily basis then you'll find this a chore. Example: "Risk Management" is listed as being on page 146, when it's actually dealt with in a chapter that starts on page 197.

When you do find the information, it is clearly and concisely represented, but I'd suggest checking with the publisher that the index has been fixed before ordering.
