4.0 out of 5 stars Building an effective team? - here's the only book you need, 14 Jan 2006
By Mr. M. Decker "mdecker" (London, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Before I read this book, I thought the secret to success as a Managing Director was to surround myself with people just like me (yes, I was that arrogant). Those of you who know the book will recognise a Super Plant when you see one...

This book eloquently outlines just what you need to do to get it right first time. I've dipped into it time after time over the last fifteen years (I'm here buying my third or fourth copy - I keep giving them away), and can well understand why it continues to be a reference work. It will teach you how to put together the right people for a Board, a management team, or just a small project group. You'll find yourself making sure you've got a 'completer-finisher' in there, and you'll use the techniques from this book to get it right first time.

Some of the content can be heavy going and somewhat boring, but the best antidote for this is to jump straight to the tests to assess yourself. Then a light will go on and you'll realise it's not just talk - this stuff actually makes sense so it's worth wading through.

Highly recommended - but it loses one star for its somewhat plodding style here and there.

A must for anyone interested in Team Behaviour/Psychology at work. This is one of the few Management texts I've managed to read end-to-end for ages.

4.0 out of 5 stars group working, 17 May 2003
By A Customer
I found this book very informative and helpful in understanding group workings. Esp. belbin's team roles, enabling you to identify your own and work upon your strenths from this.

I've tried to read this book a few times, but it sends me to sleep after a few pages. I'm sure it's full of useful stuff, but it fails to hold my attention. Read more
