This book will enable health care professionals, particularly midwives, to understand the spectrum of cultural and religious issues that affect the quality of care that they can give to women and their families during child bearing. They are encouraged to reflect on their own attitudes and assumptions and are offered ways of improving their communication skills in this very sensitive area. Most Helpful Customer Reviews   8 of 8 people found the following review helpful: 5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent text for students and qualified staff alike, 10 Dec 2000 By A Customer This book is a wonderful text explaining in some depth the differences in cultures which midwives and other health professionals may come across, thereby giving them some insight into the importance of culture in others' lives. The chapters at the back of the book concentrate on differing religions, and makes very fascinating reading if you are interested in other cultures. Communication is a major part of the book which is important for all caring professions, as a lack of communication with clients and their families may lead to what could be considered substandard/inferior care. A good text for student midwives on the path to their chosen career, but also an invaluable text to be placed on midwives' bookshelves to dip into as and when needed.
