Product Description

Review
"This book demands the reader s recognition of their own culture and beliefs and leads in both a gentle and sometimes challenging way into an understanding of other people s cultural perspectives. It is an essential book for every student of midwifery whether at the beginning of their career or as part of their continuing learning within midwifery practice." "Lea Jamieson, Head of Midwifery and Women s Health Studies, Nightingale Institute, King s College, London."
much of relevance for all health care professionals, irrespective of discipline. A real joy to review, this book is good, clearly written, and sensitive. Read it!" "Trudy Stevens, Researcher Practitioner/Anthropologist," MIDIRS Midwifery Digest, September 1996
own beliefs have been challenged [by this book] and I have found it useful as a practising midwife. I therefore recommend the book for any health care library, and encourage readers to take time to read the book for maximum benefit."Inprint Multidisciplinary Health Journal, April 1996
this book is an excellent resource for those providing care in pregnancy and pregnancy loss. It would help those providing care to ensure they avoid indirect discrimination and provide the best possible information on specific cultures and religions, and would be an excellent reference source."Miscarriage Association, April 1999

Product Description
This book will enable health care professionals, particularly midwives, to understand the spectrum of cultural and religious issues that affect the quality of care that they can give to women and their families during child bearing. They are encouraged to reflect on their own attitudes and assumptions and are offered ways of improving their communication skills in this very sensitive area. Research based, the book also draws on interviews conducted specifically for this publication.

In a plural society, everyone involved in providing, planning and managing women's health services requires special skills to meet individual cultural and religious needs. This unique and sensitive book presents down-to-earth, practical and constructive ways of enhancing practice in all areas of women's health care.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent text for students and qualified staff alike, 10 Dec 2000
By A Customer
This book is a wonderful text explaining in some depth the differences in cultures which midwives and other health professionals may come across, thereby giving them some insight into the importance of culture in others' lives. The chapters at the back of the book concentrate on differing religions, and makes very fascinating reading if you are interested in other cultures. Communication is a major part of the book which is important for all caring professions, as a lack of communication with clients and their families may lead to what could be considered substandard/inferior care. A good text for student midwives on the path to their chosen career, but also an invaluable text to be placed on midwives' bookshelves to dip into as and when needed.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent resource for anyone involved in maternity care, 13 Jun 2001
By A Customer
I have used this book many, many times over the past few years, and have found it extremely helpful, particularly for my community placements. Even if you work in an area with very few clients from ethnic minority backgrounds, this book could help you make all the difference to those women you do encounter. Charlotte Walker, direct entry student midwife
