Wives & Sweethearts is the sixth Lilian Harry novel set in Portsmouth and Devonshire, and follows the fortunes of two young naval wives in the 1960's. The author's own experiences as a naval wife lends authority to the story, as well as the usual careful research. Wives and Sweethearts is perhaps a 'happier' book than previous Lilian Harry novels, though not without drama, and looks set fair to do as well as its predecessors.

The six Lilian Harry books so far include a quartet set in Portsmouth during the Second World War. Beginning with best-seller Goodbye Sweetheart,and including The Girls They Left Behind, Keep Smiling Through and Moonlight and Lovesongs,these have all done well and the families of April Grove have become familiar to all LH's readers. Love and Laughter, set in Portsmouth and Plymouth during and after the war, and dealing primarily with the problems of returning servicemen and in particular the effects of incarceration in a Japanese POW camp, proved equally popular.

Lilian Harry is now working on a trilogy about Lyons' Corner House 'Nippies', set in London before and during the war, and the first - Corner House Girls - will be published in summer 2000. Popular demand has encouraged the publication of Lilian Harry books twice a year instead of only once. Watch this space! --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Reading this book is like settling down for a chat with old friends.

Lilian Harry's characters are well-drawn and lifelike. They could be your best friend or your next door neighbour.

The plot is believable and well written. There are no twists and yet you will want to read to the end.

A good, light read for a dark winter's night, or at the side of a sun-soaked swimming pool.
