The editors have done their work well and produced a book that provides a very useful overview of the subject focusing specifically on the physics and technological challenges rather than the clinical aspects of the subject. The standard of presentation of the material is high throughout and the experience many of the authors have in teaching shows itself in the clarity with which the subjects are dealt with. One of the great values of a book such as this is that mot only should it provide a ready source of information on each topic, but that it should provide reference enabling one to investigate further. Here each chapter is well referenced with all-important and up to date references present. Despite having 17 authors, I found very little unnecessary repetition and chapters were cross-referenced where appropriate. This is complemented by a full list of contents breaking each chapter into sub sections, a full index and a glossary of symbols used in the book. This book is a valuable source of information for anyone working in the field of the physics or technology of ultra sound and will be frequently reached for on my shelf
