5.0 out of 5 stars An incendiary read, 13 Dec 2006
By The Quiet American (London, England) - See all my reviews
This book is a revelation - the way Paytress pulls together the various threads of rock, art, poerty and theater that lead to Patti Smith's debut, it seems all but inevitable it was going to be a masterpiece. Paytress's book is a testament to the stature of 'pop culture' items like rock records, when done as well as this, to be true and lasting works of art. And he has the writing chops to pull it off. A must read for Patti Smith fans.

5.0 out of 5 stars Agree, 17 May 2007

This is the best thing I have read about Smith. It is actually quite analytic and not a little theoretical. The case it makes is a convincing one. It is well written and well researched. I also found out about 4 or 5 'facts' I did not know. The analysis of 'Land' is compelling.
