Product Description

Product Description
"Music, Food and Love" conveys the vivid experiences of a boy with a passion for music and cooking who grew up in Beijing before and during the Chinese Cultural Revolution. For him, music and food are equally important. The youngest of six children, Guo Yue recalls his childhood at the heart of a close-knit family of musicians living beside a Beijing alley. He draws the reader into a world where music is everywhere - even in the rhythmic chopping sounds of the kitchen. We follow Yue as he explores Beijing, watching others and learning through imitation, until he finally leaves for the West. This beautifully-written and evocative memoir highlights how, despite poverty and repressed times, cooking family dishes was a life-affirming experience, symbolising freedom of expression. Guo Yue is a Chinese Bamboo Flutes player and composer now living in London. His book gives the reader a taste of family life in China and real Chinese home cooking. He shares with readers a few delicious traditional recipes which have been passed on in his family and among friends. These are based on a few simple ingredients, a natural approach to taste, colour and texture, and an innate love of good food.

About the Author
As a musician Guo Yue has travelled extensively, performing in Peter Garbriel's Womad festivals and making recordings and composing film soundtracks (including The Last Emperor). His own bamboo flutes concerto was performed with the BBC Concert Orchestra. Guo Yue gives regular cookery workshops at the Divertimenti Cookery School in London. He also recently made a cookery programme for BBC World Service. Clare Farrow is married to Guo Yue, and they live in London

When I was a child in the 1960s, growing up in the overcrowded hutongs, the maze of alleys and courtyards in the north-east of Beijing, people would always greet their friends and neighbours with the words 'Che fan le ma?' (Have you eaten?). Read the first page

3.0 out of 5 stars Intriguing mix, 21 Feb 2006
By A Customer
This comprises approx 2/3 memoirs, followed by 1/3 recipes (which are referred to in the memoirs, so you get their context).

Reading about the Cultural Revolution through the eyes of a child and teenager is fascinating, but somehow it all feels a bit superficial. However, there are some lovely descriptions and good insights: one of the appeals of cooking being that it wasn't ideologically controlled.

Overall, the rather wooden style dilutes his passion for his subject and there are occasionally awkward musical metaphors, almost added as an afterthought - often the same one (the "percussive" sound of finely chopped food being added to hot oil).

But worth a read if you are interested in Chinese history and/or would like a different angle on basic Chinese cooking.

5.0 out of 5 stars a gentle memoir, 17 Mar 2006
By A Customer
"Music, Food and Love" is a beautifully written and charming portrayal of the spirit of a boy expressing himself through music and food during troubled times.

This enjoyable and original book invites us into the overcrowded alley-ways and courtyards of Beijing where we share in the rich and warmly textured layers of family life, amid the chaos and confusion of the Cultural Revolution.

It is a delightful cameo of film-like image, tastes and sounds, painted in words which can be universally appreciated.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must for visitors to China !, 19 April 2008
By Mrs. E. A. M. Rice (Blackburn , UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
An enchanting book which evokes in a very captivating way some aspects of that vast diverse and mysterious entity that is China and which is currently so very much in the headlines globally - a personal memoir
that is well worth reading as Guo Yue born in 1958 vividly recalls the smells and tastes and sights and sounds and feelings of growing up in China .
