Product Description

Product Description

One of the most extraordinary and poignant survival stories to come out of World War II; Misha was only six years old when her parents were taken away from their home in Belgium to Auschwitz. She was given a new name, a new home, and forced into a new religion. No one told her why her parents were no longer with her, only that they had gone East. So one day, equipped only with a tiny compass and a few provisions, she set out East to find them. Misha crossed Belgium, Germany and Poland on foot alone - until, close to starvation in a vast forest, she was adopted by a family of wolves. She ate and played with the wolf cubs, and was protected by their mother. Finally, at the end of the war, she found her way home to Belgium via the Ukraine, Romania and Italy. She never found her parents.

About the Author

Misha Defonseca was born to a Jewish family in Brussels in 1934; when she returned to Belgium at the end of the war after her epic journey, she met her future husband. After they were married, they emigrated to the United States; she now lives near Boston, close to a wolf sanctuary, and visits her friends the wolves every day.

1.0 out of 5 stars Another fake 'survivor' memoir - the author has admitted she made it all up, she's not even Jewish !, 10 Jul 2006
By George Rodger - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I'm amazed that anyone would actually believe this guff - a little girl adopted by a pack of wolves? "Thanks to the wolves, she survived the war...", and all this after oh-so-easily crossing Belgium, Germany and Poland on foot during wartime ?
Anyone with an ounce of sense could see that it was all fake - and now the author has admitted it's all made up, even her name, she's not even Jewish - just check any news site.
None of it happened, and she's been laughing all the way to the bank with her millions, whilst the gullible kept on buying, and weeping over "the triumph of the human spirit" etc., etc.

1.0 out of 5 stars Suckers. News Accounts Now Say the Story is a Hoax, 29 Feb 2008
By Nikoli Gogol (Edmonton) - See all my reviews
"I ask forgiveness to all who felt betrayed," Defonseca said, according to a written statement the lawyers gave to The Associated Press.

The author was Belgian, not Jewish. Her war years were spent comfortably in Belgium. Her "autobiography" is her alternate reality.

Another Wilkomirski tale. The more unlikely a story is, the more scrutiny should be applied when checking accuracy. When will fantastic stories like this cease to be believed?

1.0 out of 5 stars Sham, Fake, Deliberate attempt to deceive, 26 May 2008
By titaniamoth (London UK) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
I started this 'autobiographical' book not knowing that the author had fairly recently divulged it was (mostly) all invented. Very quickly - long before the 'wolves' entered, something felt absolutely wrong - the initial relating of the disappearance of her parents etc somehow seemed too imbued with adult consciousness, and though I know that there were many extraordinary survivals from that terrible time this seemed like a very wounded or very cynical (often the same thing) adult deep in a heroic fantasy about herself.

Certainly, none of this made sense as the true story of a 6 year old.

I have given it the lowest rating I can, not because it is terribly written, but I am angry about the shameful abuse and manipulation the author has perpetrated, and also the cheapening and devaluing of the real and terrible experiences of so many. As I continued to read this book, my sense that it was a fake continued to grow - but I am so unwilling to believe that anyone could deliberately set out to deceive like this, that I found myself castigating myself for my own disbelief. It was only whilst I was about to post my review, which would have been a low rated one, but saying 'somehow, I'm unable to believe this is real, or is completely real, that there may be a kernal of truth, but the author is consciously or unconsciouly fabricating'. I looked up a couple of other very low reviews and found myself directed to the fact there had been a recent expose of Defonseca.

Shame on you Mischa Defonseca - I don't particularly care that you have set out to hoodwink the public in order to garner financial rewards, though that is of course pretty shabby - I DO care that you have given credence to all those who seek to say the whole holocaust experience is 'made-up', and i do care that you have so cynically exploited the very real and tragic suffering experienced by many millions, and the survivors and descendents of those survivors

I am just glad I borrowed this book from the library - I feel tainted enough that i have lined your pockets by public lendings, had I bought your book I would have torn it up and used it for cat litter. Shameful behaviour, you have a heart of money, Defonseca

This is a remarkable true story of an extremely couragous young girl and a fascinating inside into wolves who, by adopting her, probably saved her life. Very well-worth reading.
