"'Keri Arthur's imagination and energy infuse everything she writes with zest' Charlaine Harris 'Keri Arthur skillfully mixes her suspenseful plot with heady romance in her thoroughly enjoyable alternate reality Melbourne' Kim Harrison"

Product Description

In Melbourne's urban underworld, there's a nightclub for every fetish, fantasy and desire. But for Riley Jenson, a rare hybrid of vampire and werewolf, one such club has become an obsession. Riley hasn't come in pursuit of pleasure but of an unknown killer who's been using the steamy nightspot as his hunting grounds. Leave it to Riley to find the only ticket into the heavily guarded club: Jin, a deliciously hot-bodied bartender who might just provide the key to unmasking a killer unlike any other in the Directorate's experience. Taunted by a former colleague-turned-rogue, distracted by an ex-lover's attentions, Riley follows Jin into a realm of pleasure she could never have imagined. And as danger and passion ignite, a shocking mystery begins to unravel - one where Riley herself becomes the ultimate object of desire ...

5.0 out of 5 stars Dangerous Games - Keri Arthur - getting better with every book, 29 Aug 2007
By Naomi Clark "Violet Corona" (UK) - See all my reviews

I won't bother rehashing the plot here, because Amazon gives far better summaries than me. Suffice to say this is the fourth Riley Jenson novel and, in my humble opinion, the best one yet. Riley is a little older and wiser when it comes to her relationships. Although the cloning saga first three books is ostensbily over, there are threads still hanging that tie in nicely with this new mystery.

Arthur deepens and darkens Riley's world, pitting our intrepid heroine against ancient gods and dangerous temptations, skillfully weaving old myths with the modern world. There is further exploration of Riley's developing psychic powers and her role as a reluctant guardian.

I hesitated in giving the last Riley book - Tempting Evil - five stars because two reoccuring points annoyed me. The first was Arthur's repeated use of the phrase "my hormones did a happy jog/shuffle/dance/etc." This continues to be an annoyance, but the plot is so fast-paced and fascinating it's now less of an annoyance. The second was Riley's relationship with Quinn, the vampire who proclaims to love her but spends a lot of time manipulating her and lying to her. In Dangerous Games, Riley re-evaluates this part of her life, clearly finally as sick of Quinn as I am.

In light of Riley coming to her senses, and because this was a thoroughly enthralling, darkly entrancing book, I'm giving Dangerous Games five stars and hoping Embraced by Darkness is as good.

2.0 out of 5 stars not so dangerous, 17 Jun 2007

As a frequent reader of paranormal romance, I'm always on the look out for new authors. Especially when the books involve vampires and werewolves. I was therefore, quite intrigued by Keri Arthur's idea of a half vampire half werewolf heroine.
Keri Arthur creates her own supernatural world within our known world and introduces new rules that can be somewhat startling. There are vampires created in labs, mental powers enhanced by drugs, and werewolves who have a very enhanced sex drive, but at least she sticks to the old one vampires can't go out in sunlight.
The main character Riley and her twin brother Rohan work as agents for the Directorate of other Races. They are trained killers and make sure that no bad guys threaten humans or supernatural beings. However, not only do they use violence but also sex to get information.

Someone is killing women. They are all missing their small finger and are gutted but oddly enough they have a smile on her face. Riley's investigation leads her to a club that is not quite what it seems. To get into the club she might have to do more than she bargained for.

As far as the story goes it is well paced and a good little who done it plot. I didn't really take to the main character. That might be due the fact that it is book number 4 in the series. Also as much as I enjoy the odd sexual interlude there was way too much of it that wasn't even necessary for the story line.
I wouldn't run out and get the other books. It is just a 2 out of 5 because the murder story and fight scenes were good.
