'An exciting...entertaining first novel' Sunday Telegraph 'One of the best crime debuts for years' Yorkshire Post

Product Description

A self-defence expert with a motorbike and an attitude, Charlie Fox doesn't need to go looking for trouble. It generally finds her. House-sitting for a friend seemed like an easy favour at first but the house in question is in the Lavender Garden Estate. Teenage gangs are running riot and Charlie's desperate neighbours have been forced to employ an expensive - and ruthless - security firm to apply rough justice where the legal kind has failed. The situation gets even uglier when a young Asian boy is fatally wounded in what appears to be a racially motivated shooting. Caught in the middle of an urban battlefield, Charlie's more than able to take care of herself but then she comes face to face with a spectre from her army past. As the tensions rise, lives will depend on Charlie working out just who she can really trust...

5.0 out of 5 stars Riot Act, 1 May 2003
By Ghost (West Yorkshire, UK) - See all my reviews
This is the sort of book that makes you wish for an attack of amnesia so that you could read it again and enjoy all its twists and surprises afresh. Zoe Sharp has a wicked turn of phrase and the ability to create characters of intriguing depth. Charlie Fox is an enigma. The front she presents to the world is as tough as her old disgarded army boots but it conceals a very private vulnerability.
Riot Act opens with Charlie house-sitting for a friend who lives on an estate in Lancaster, a simple enough favour on the face of it. But rivalries flare up. People - including Charlie -get hurt. Some of them die. When Charlie realises she is on the killer's shopping list she thinks things couldn't get any worse...as you would. And then an old friend turns up to prove her wrong.
This book is packed with twists and surprises. Just when you think you've sussed it, Zoe Sharp throws in another loop that knocks all your best guesses into a cocked hat.
Read it and enjoy. Incidentally, if you're a dog-lover, this is the bizz.

4.0 out of 5 stars House-sitting can be dangerous, 5 Feb 2004
In common with most sensible people, when trouble starts, I depart. Not so with CHARLIE FOX, when it hits the fan she can't help but get in amongst it, and it's always messy. She's ex-army,tough, but with problems to deal with in her past. In some ways you'd like to be like CHARLIE, but in most ways you wouldn't.
