Faith Bleasdale 'A bright and sunny read, whatever the weather' Matt Whyman 'Very witty - it made me laugh out loud several times' Deborah Wright

4.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant!, 10 Feb 2005
After reading Andrea Semple's more recent chick-lit offering, The Make-Up Girl, I simply had to read this one. After all, Semple's wit and giggle-out-loud humour always provide a brilliant read. The Ex-Factor (a novel about sex, relationships and other natural disasters) is definitely pleasing.

Heroine Martha Seymore is an agony aunt for a high-profile women's magazine. Actually, no - she's a relationship consultant. Her job being the advice-giver to many a hopeful reader with noone else to turn to, it is quite ironic when Martha has to deal with a big relationship problem of her own - an unfaithful boyfriend.

Reluctantly stepping into the shoes of her readers for once, Martha has to deal with her problems maturely. Though cheating Luke soon becomes just one of her life worries. With her relationship constantly on her mind, and the emerging ex-boyfriends who she still feels a little attached to, there is also her bitchy schoolmate Desdemona, overly-organised best friend Fiona, and flamboyant new flatmate Jaqui. On top of all this, there is also Martha's job which may be lost if she's not careful!

I must admit that I enjoyed The Make-Up Girl a little bit more, though The Ex-Factor is definitely a brilliant read. An amusing love story teamed with the harsh reality of infidelity, along with a hint of bitchiness. I would recommend this to any avid chick-lit fan.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very, very funny, 13 May 2003
By Amy Daly (Manchester, UK) - See all my reviews
I bought this book after seeing it in Heat mag, and I have to say that this is one hilarious book. It's not quite as soppy as a lot of other books like this and there are tons of giggle aloud bits. Martha, the main character, is very easy to relate to and you feel sorry for her from the beginning chapter... Loved the Ibiza bits as well - especially the nudist beach scene. Overall I'd definitely recommend it to anyone sick of the same old chick books - and who isnt too prudish..

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent!!!, 1 Oct 2004
By Fran "Tastic" (Midlands, UK) - See all my reviews
I really enjoyed this book, it took me a few chapters to really get into but by the time I was half-way through I could hardly put it down, quite funny in places and emotional in others.
I liked the ending too, it wasn't one of those feminist-type endings and yet it still leaves you waiting for more...
This is the first book I've read by Andrea Semple and I'm now looking to purchase her second offering.
